Show THE TELEPHONE TELE-PHONE TALK Local' manager Pearson Pear-son tells His side of the story. .Read it. "Last Saturday Mr. Pearson, manager man-ager of the local telephone line In this city, came to our oilice and In a gentlemanly gen-tlemanly manner desired to state a ;iJf few facts rclatlve to the telephone Slv iservlcc which has been discussed In ' ' tyo previous Issues of this paper. In Justice to all parties concerned, wo deem 11 proper to publish both sides -of the question, believing that gopd will result therefrom. In comparing 'the Logan service with that of Salt ' lLakc City and Ogden It appears that 'the comparison Is not a fair one. Theie arc two kinds of service In use; one, the Individual line which costs $00 a year for business houses and $48 a year for residences; tho other service is what is called a party line on which three or four phones are attached, the price being $30 a year for business houses and $18 a year for rc'sfdc'npbsStohose using the Individual Individ-ual line have It' 'exclusively for them-solves, them-solves, wlille those" using the party .line have It In connection with tlneo -others. In Salt!,iLakcJ'-and Ogden B most all the service isbn individual .lines, while In Logan ninety-live per .cent of tho service Is rfo? "party lines. fl It can readily be seen that the In st dividual line assures promptness, fl -whereas the party line does notrfrpm, I the fact that there arc four partfejj on fl that service, and --If one of the, fl -receivers of the telephone Is down S t from tho hook It is impossible for Wiadk -cither of .the otlier'tljrqctto'bj! heard !hA. .at the cenlral ofticc anoVovd.llrao the flj ithrec phones are necessarily hiopeia- 'tlvc. With this explanation it Is fl .evident that those on party lines caq- 9 not expect the same service as those! fl oh Individual lines. Manager I'car- B son further claims that the sj stein B used In Logan Is not antiquated but B Is up to date.. Tho following aio some fl of the gilevances of thootlice. Sub- fl scrlberswlll not answer phone calls as fl promptly as tl-cy should. This will fl apply especially to stores where mcr- W chants have been known to llnlsli fl waiting upon a customer before an- fl swering the phone and this delay has fl been attiibutcd to this cential oilice. fl A great many people who have icgls- fl ter phones make calls and positively H lefuse to register when lequested by H tho central otllcc, and many of them H talk unkindly to tho girls. fl Manager Pearson expresses himself fl as being anxious to give tho best fl possible service, but can not give the fl same service on party lines that can fl bo given on Individual lines. He B states that he Is ever ready and will- B ing to listen to all complaints If re- fl , ferred to him, Instead of discussing flcfatif the dllfcrcnces with the girls. y? I" conclusion wo mjght add that fl there Is somo excuse for the delays on the system that picvails In Logan, fl for a person on a party line cannot fl expect the scrvico of an Individual B line at the prices paid. It woud be B Just as consistent to expect an article B for two dollars, when its value is six fl dollars. The fact however, remains B the same that thcio is not that kind- fl ness and courtesy extended from the fl .girls at the phono as there should be. fl People having phones aro more or less fl cultuied and to them it sounds harsh, fl -when a question Is not understood, fl for the central girl to call back with a fl blatant "what" Instead of asking in a H mote plciislng way, such as "what did fl you sayV" Tho girls should remem- H oer If they dcslro to bo spoken to fl kindly they must be kind In return. fl Wo trust that all parties concerned fl will prollb by tho small agitation B that has been on this question, H and each side be consistent with fl their expectations, and be willing to H perform their respective duties in a fl proper manner. |
