'J5, ISO'). -John Andrew Kerr, aged 21, a brother of Pies Wm. J. Kerr, of the A. C. of U., was killed by a cave-In at a gravel pit near here Saturday morning Fully a ton of giavel fell a distance of twenty feet, burying the young man to the neck, crushing the ribs of the right side, breaking the left leg below the knee, and causing Internal hcmoi-rhage hcmoi-rhage from which he died at one o'clock.four hours after the accident. How it Happened. Young Kerr with Will Terry, of Lewiston, was hauling from a gravel bank at High Creek, recently purchased purchas-ed by the Lewiston sugar factory. The were ready to leave the pit, Terry having Just gone around his wagon to pick up the lines while Kerr was near the back wheel going to his own wagon only a few steps away when the cave-in came and burled him to his neck. He was quickly dug out by Terry. Dr. Adamson was then summoned, and temporarily set the broken leg. Will II. Lewis, ex-Rlsh-op Skidmorc and A. II. Hendricks took the injured man to his mother's house and other physicians were sum moned. Doctors Parkinson, Adam-son Adam-son and Merrill did all that was possible possi-ble but to no avail, the young man dying dy-ing as above stated. Sad Death Scene. It is the stoiy of one of the physicians physi-cians that he never witnessed a more pathetic Incident than the parting of the husband and wife. At the time of the .accident the w ife, with her little lit-tle babe, was at tho home of her mother, having gone over for a visit. It was some two hours after the accident ac-cident that she was brought to the bedside of hot dying husband, who It seems was hanging onto life bi sheer force of will that he might bid his family goodbye. It is said that to all intents and purposes the young man vyas dead ere his wife reached his side but his desire to see them kept Ids spirit from taking Its Might. It Is hard to conceive the great shock to the young wife, and the parting was such that the physicians, hardened to such scenes as they arc. must needs turn away. After he had been his loved ones, kissed the wife and dear little babe goodby c, he seemed icady to, go, and his spirit went out. .The slncerest and deepest sympathy of tho entire community goes out to tl)o wife and mother and little fatherless father-less child, and tho other relatives, of whom thero are many. The Funeral. The funeral service was held on Monday afternoon In the Richmond meeting house, and was largely attended at-tended by friends from Lewiston and Richmond. In a gravel hole not far fiom this out, Just twelve years ago 22-jear-old James Kcrr.a half brother to Andrew, was killed, so also was his companion, Hen Lewis, son of V. C. Lew Is. They were blasting out the gravel. James Kerr was taken to his mother's place, as was Andrew, and died twelve hours after the explosion. In the gravel holes here four have been killed, the llrst being Geo Chase, seveial j ears ago. Three had their legs broken, the last one being Frank Thompson, of this place a shoit time ago. |
