Show The New Year. Ueglnnlng today business men will commence to take an Inventory of their business and to balance up their accounts and ascertain exactly the condition of their finances, whether they have lost or gained during the year Just past. To-day would be a good time for all of us to take an Inventory In-ventory of ourselves, cast up tho right and wrong of our lives and sec if tho balance stands on the side of gain. There ls a responsibility and a duty resting upon every person, that has to do with our relation to our fellow man, to those whom we arc brought in contact on this pilgrimage. A great many of us become imbued with the Idea that our chief object In life is to make money, no matter at what cost. It concerns us little as to the means we employ or to the sorrow sor-row we bring upon others. We justify justi-fy ourselves with the thought that wo arc shrewder than they, and after all It's business. Such men arc not In the world to scatter sunshine along their path but usually leave a shadow. They build up fortunes, spend millions for pleasure but the ingredient that makes for happiness is never found. Their lives show a loss on the inventory. inven-tory. There ls another class that docs not aspire so much to the honors of men nor do they seek so much for wealth. If It comes to them they use It to bless others and they rarely die wealthy- They llvo to make people happier and the world better for their having lived, and when they die the hearts of the people go out to them, in love and sympathy. Such people show a gain on tho Inventory. It ls a strange fact that most of us have a wrong conception of life. It seems much easier to frown than to smile, to scold than to praise. Instead In-stead of adding to people's happiness wo till up their cups of sorrow. All this Is wrong. God gave us charity, love and patience as attributes of happiness happi-ness and blessed Indeed is tho man who cultivates them and Imbues his natuie with their Influence. So today let us cast up the accounts of our lives and see If the world Is better or worse, Its people happier or more miserable for our having lived, and if we find tlie balance on tho side of lovs let us begin this New Year determined to have a credit to our account when the year shall pass again. |
