Ho was recorder of Philadelphia and chairman of tho Republican stato committee during Uio following year and In 1870 was again elected Kocretnry of tho commonwealth, com-monwealth, holding tho odlco for thrco years. Ho wns delegato to tho Ilopubllcnn national convontlon In 1872 and 187C and also from 1880 to 1892. Tho Inst Btato oftlco which ho held was that of stato treasurer In 188C. Ho was elected United States senntor from Pennsylvania by tho Republican Re-publican party and took his scat March 4, 1887 Ho was chairman of tho Ilopubllcnn nntlonal committee In 1888. Quay was United States senator for two terniR from 1887 to 1S09. In tho latter year ho was tried for misappropriation misap-propriation of tho public funds nnd acquitted April 21, 1899, and on tho samo day ho was appointed United States senator by Govornor Stono of Pennsylvania.
