Show SOME OF THE ' AFTFRMATH Comment on Phases of the Elections, Hon. Joseph Howell was at Ogen, enroute to Washington, I). C, when ho heard tho news of the Republican vlctoiy In Logan, and promptly fired off this telegram to tho ma or elect: Ogden, Utah, Nov. 4, 1(103. E. W. Romnhok, Logan. Hearty congratulations to vou and tho Republicans of Logan. our v Ic-tory Ic-tory insuies piogress and advancement advance-ment for our city. Joski-ii Hovvki.i,. Mr. Fred Scholes, In speaking of his defeat, said, "Well, there's one consolation con-solation a better man got It." And while otheis might not express It that wa, it Is geneially consldeicd that Mr. N. M. Hansen Is a good, strong man In whom one can alwavs depend. In the Third Ward, John R. Ed-wards Ed-wards ran but three votes behind Ilobt.Andeison, a pretty fall Indication Indica-tion that his business did not hurt him in his-race. John is a good man, as men go, and lias many friends among those who would not deign to be his customers. Tom Smith piobably had the most tcnlfiu scrap on his hands of any In the whole bunch of councihnen. He was in the ward with the Democratic Demo-cratic candidate for Ma or, had one of tho Bishop's. counselors on tho ticket against him, and Is located in a hot-bed of Democracy generally. Every combination was used against hhn.but to no avail, and Tom will occupy a chair in the council for four ears. Just what figure the Socialists cut Is still a little matter of conjcctuie. In all piobablllty Alexander Lewis, Socialist candidate for maor, drew most heavily from Anthon Andeison. Mr. Lewis has heretofoie been a Democrat, Dem-ocrat, and it is but natuial to suppose that jie had within that party fi lends who voted for him. In tho case of Joseph C. Jensen, although heretofoie a Republican, it seems that lie hint Farr rather than Ciockctfc. Just t hat elements conspired to put this phase on the matter Is et a problem. At Hyrum the Rcpubllcens elected a greater number of olllclals than our Wednesdays edition gave them ciedit for. Ti . elected q. F. Olsen for Justl of the Peace, Otto Llljenqulst for Recorder, and Levi Curtis for Mar shal. This last Is considered a great victory, as the piesent Dcmociatlc marshal lias made a good otllcer. Otto Llljemnjlst also made an excellent excel-lent race and his victory should be most highly giatifying to himself and the Republicans. It Is said of Levi Cuitis that ho Is a most excellent oiingmanand asmaishal will made an excellent otllcer. The Republicans worked haul, but wero "up against it" Iu some Instances and could do nothing but suller defeat. The result of tho race for Recorder natuially gives rise to this question "Is is possible to put forth too great effort for ofllceV" Mrs. Oimsby Is a most respectable woman of excellent merit and Is honored and loved by her own party and by those of opposite political faith, and none take pleasure In her defeat except as a representative representa-tive of that party whoso policies aro believed to be unsound. Mrs. Ormsby made a "strenuous" campaign that is, she visited tho greater number of homes of this city and solicited votes, which was her right, privilege and duty as an earnest, energetic candidatebut candi-datebut expressions generally lead to tho belief that this served to lose her votes lather than bring them to her. It Is to bo regretted that there aic not sufficient otllccs for alt the worthy women who might desire to be officeholders. The local Dcmociatlc oigan takes exception to a head in our last Issue In which It is stated that "Wellsvllle is Republican." Mr. Wm. Maughan Jr., of Wellsvllle, also called us up over tho phone esterday and made the statement that our paper gave a wrong Impression of tho tine conception concep-tion of things In Wellsvllle, that the ticket elected Is a Cltlcns' ticket, and should not be credited as 'Republican. 'Repub-lican. We can onlvsay that we regret re-gret the unfortunate statement, and olTcr as a defenso that such was the conception wc received while talking ovei the phone Tuesday night'. When practically everything else went Republican it was but natural to state that Wellsvllle had done the same. There Is no disposition to claim what Isn't ours, for wu got enough to feel well satisfied. If our Democratic friends on that ticket who wero so sadly maligned will accept an abject apology, wo will feel that they are a magnanimous lot, and we'll "set 'em up" when they como to Logan.
