Show I KEEP COMMITTEE NON-PARTISAN. H In order that the Mayor shall become a H member of tho Electric Light committee an H effort to revise the city ordinance Is being H made. As the ordinance now reads, the elec- l trie light committee must consist of four mem- I" bess of the city council, two from each political party. The plan proposed Is to make the com- H' mlttec a body of Ave with the mayor as chair- lr man. H That the mayor should be a member of H- that committee is certain and It Is to be re- Hr gretted that the ordinance was so drawn as to Bf. exclude him from membership, but we are dls- H inclined to tho Idea of creating a committee of H live, for tho reason that It necessarily makes H the committee partisan. This would place the H committee practically as It was in the I beginning, when democracy howled so fre- qucntly. The last administration made the H committee nun-partisan and it should be kept ' that. H' If the mayor Is to bo added to that com- H mittee, and he should be, the proper plan would H,) be to repeal the ordinance Insofar as It confines H ' the membership to the councllmanlo body, then H name Mayor Edwards as one of the four. This H ' would give the democrats two representatives H on the committee and the republicans two. H Surely democracy, the champion of non-parti- B sanshlp, will not place the committee Into the partisanship from which the last admlnistra-B admlnistra-B tlon rescued it. |
