Show Interesting Discourse Good Advice on Spraying Fruit Trees. The following remarks and instructions instruc-tions by County Horticulturist N. R. Broby aro especially timely and all who are in charge of orchards will do well to heed them. He says: Spraying Is now at hand and tho horticulturist law or Utalu requires that all fruit trees In bearing shall bo sprayed at least once, shortly after blossoms fall and before the calyx closes, with some arsenical spray such as Paris green 1 lb to 130 gallons cf water or arsenate of lead 2 to a lbs to fiO gallons of water. Tho Paris green Is heavy and settles to the bottom or the vessel very soon. Therefore it requires constant stirring to keep It mixed with the water or it will only be the water that will be put on tho tree and the labor and expenditure will be lost and the party feel that there is nothing In spraying. The arsenate of lead stays In suspension much better and Is therefore used by many fruit growers but it costs considerably con-siderably more. It is Important to have a good pump to do a good Job, one that can furnish suillclcnt pressure to drive it Into the bottom of the calyx as there Is where about 00 per.cent or the worms enter the apple. To accomplish this It Is necessary to reach over the top or the trees, partly by elevating oneself on a wagon and uslug an extension rod with a bend at the end bv the nozzle to bring tho spray from above and down and about the sides or the tree to the center. As the blossoms are always facing the sun and tho light and as the sprav Is wanted at the bottom bot-tom or the calyx, it must be directed straight against the face or open side of them with considerable force to get It in between the stems, that partly covers the calyx cup. The spraying must be most thoroughly done regardless of the weather, as rain can not bring the poison out of the calyx after It Is placed there, but the calyx will soon close Qp while you are watting for good weather and then the worm has the better part of the fight. A nozzle that throws a coarse hard spray will do better work for calyx spraying than one that makes a mist. Do not attempt at-tempt to spray without a nozzle or throw It up over the tree and let It fall down as that kind of spraying does not pay. If tho trees arp tco high to reach above, It will pay better to head them back and, if too high for that, better dig them out and replace by others, as wormy fruit is worthless forlmarkct and no better for homo use. It Is only a short tlmo till all wormy fruit will bo barred from tho market by law, Just as It Is In Idaho today. For further particulars apply to the Agricultural College for bulletins that; give some very valuable Information Informa-tion on this Subject or to tho fruit tree Inspector as ho will glvo you all the assistance ho can. |
