In view of tho instructions of Judge Wood to tho jury and his Interpretation Interpreta-tion and explanation of Idaho's law of conspiracy, It sccmBjclear that the jury could not havo rendered any other verdict, although ln their own minds they. might have believed Haywood Hay-wood had guilty knowledge of the crime to which Orchard confessed and of others In which he was Implicated by Orchard's testimony. The jury may have believed Haywood guilty and that he was an accomplice' In tho commission lot tho many crimes to which Orchard confessed, yet under tho law they were debarred from rendering a verdict of guilty and were so Instructed by Judge Wood. That Is, the jury was Instructed that Haywood Hay-wood could not be convicted upon tho unsupported word of an accomplice. accom-plice. Tho trial of Haywood brought out clearly and unmistakably tho fact that the controlling spirits ln both tho Mlno Owners' association and the Western Federation of Minors arc a pretty bad lot, and that neither organization, or-ganization, as led by those who have been leading It, will be deterred from tho commission of any etlme that Its leaders might consider necessary to attain any certain or particular object or purpose. Tho Western Federation of Miners has been swallowed up by the Socialists. Social-ists. W. D. Haywood Is a pronounced Socialists. Haywood's acquittal will bo looked upon by the Socialists as a vindication vin-dication of their political aud sociological socio-logical theories. Its chastening and humanizing effect will be felt ln tho ranks of organized labor, and viewed in that light tho verdict Is all right |
