Show Dies from an Enlarged Heart Dr. Boynton, formerly of Smithfield, Dies in California; Heart Abnormal. Smitiikieli), Feb, 20. The news came to this city a few days ago that Dr. C. E. Boynton, formerly physician of this city, but who a couple of years ago removed to California, had died there. Dr. Hoynton had many friends and acquaintances in Smithfield and the north part of the county, and j ' without doubt the following In regard to his death, taken from the "Free Press", Redding, California, will be of inteiest. That paper says: "The victim of heart failure, from which he had suffered the greater part of his life, Dr. C. E. Boynton died-suddenly died-suddenly at his home at the Howard place, just across the river, at 10 p. in. Monday night. ' Dr. Boynton had been ill frequently .. during the past few weeks and a short time ago his malady was considered quite dangerous, but he apparently recovered re-covered and was much hotter for a few days, being able to come to town on pleasant days. On Monday he was taken worse again, and although the sinking spell was not considered particularly par-ticularly dangerous he died at 10 o'clock Monday night. Coroner Bassettand Dr.Bauter went our to the Boynton residence Tuesday morning and Dr. Banter pronounced heart disease the cause of death. An autopsy, however, was held at l:.'l o'clock Tuesday afternoon to make sure. Enlarged Heart, The autopsy revealed a remarkable condition of the heart. The ordinary human heart weighs from twelve to fourteen ounces. Dr. Boynlon's heart weighed full two pounds thirty-two ounces. Both sets of valves were badly bad-ly diseased. Dr. Boynton was considered one of the best physicians of northern California, Cali-fornia, although he had been here but a short time. lie came from the southern part of the state to Mlllvllle several months ago, and later moved to Redding, having oillces in the Firth building, and residing at the Howard place across the river. Ills practice In this community was not large on account of his short stay and continued illness which hindered him in his work, but the cases which ho did handle were all successfully treated. Tho deceased leaves a wife and two stepdaughters, who arc practically without means of support, although until tho last few years ho was a very wealthy man, having retired from practice to enjoy his riches which he later lost, and was forced to return to work." It may be added to this that Dr. Boynton was born In Groyeland.Mass., March l(i. 1800; graduated with degree de-gree B. S. from Amherst, later from Syracuse Medical college In 1888. He was converted to "the gospel" In Smithfield In 1809 and was faithful to the last. He leaves a wife and one child by last marriage, and two children child-ren by former marriage. Other News. Alton Merrill. Infant son of Bert and Ida Merrill, who has been 111 with a very severe attack of pneumonia for the past two weeks, is recovering and will soon be out of danger.
