The city council mcl Monday night In their regular monthly session, which proved I a long one, It being nearly mid night before Chaplain S. II. After considerable dis- jti. cusslon regarding the best methods of correcting this evil, the major and city council Instructed Marshal Ralr to arrest all minors under the Influence of liquor, and also all boys under IS caught smoking or chewing tobacco or with tobacco on their person. Funk and others petitioned j the council to straighten the street in 1 front of the property in the south end ! of the city in order that they may have a respectable side walk Instead 1 of having to wade the road as is now Ithe case. The commltte on streets will look after this matter. The well drawn plat of the cemetery was presented but was not accepted, it not being complete as is required. The committee on streets ordered the widening of pie street from Wm. Hair's to the cow lane, by the property prop-erty owners moving their fences back to their place, making the stieet thereby a four rod street. Tlio same committee also reported the surveying of the street by Sexton Nelson's ! through the old gravel bed, and the J laying olf of a new bed adjoining the old one. t The special water committee re- I ported nothing definite regarding ob- talnlng the dlllerent water systems In 1 the city, and the matter was laid over - for fuither Investigation. The old question of whether the 1 -yg city or county should lake care of the ! A full quorum, all the councilmen, were present. ; Man Drowned. Sad news reached the city today in the form of a telegram to Mrs. Fred Ralncy, telling her that Mr. Ralney's S brother, Hert, had been drowned, to- pettier with his horses, in attempting I to ford Snake river near Rexburg last Sunday. The reports are very meager at this time regarding the particulars but It Is reported that Mr. Ralney's eldest boy was with him but managed to escape. The body of his father had not been found at tills writing. Mrs. Rainey, the unfoitunatc mothei, who lives In this city, was completely prostrated pros-trated on hearing the sad news of her son's sudden death. A wife (who was Mamie Merrill, of Smitlitlcld,) -t and seen children are left to mourn 9 their husband and. father's sudden To Be Married. ! He has been working n on the 'lailroad for some time and 1 came homo last week to make prcpara- j) tions to take his bride, Miss Katie a Hansen, of Logan, who was one of his converts in Scandinavia, to Salt Lake to attend confeienco and then on the 11th bo married in the Salt Lake temple. Tho couple will lctuiu to Richmond soon after and make It their futuiehome. Many Births. ion Is still growing fast in Rich-mond. Rich-mond. II Kckeisly, our staunch Reptib- JL llcan lumberman, has decided to go ' still deeper Into tho business and to this end has purchased tho Christen- I sen saw mill in High Creek. This time of the ear, and at other times also, gravel walks and graveled streets are a source of great satisfaction satisfac-tion to the traveling public. It will no doubt, therefore, be a source of much praise toward the city fathers to know that they have made arrangements arrange-ments whereby a new gravel hole will be opened up adjoining the old site on Swen Nelson's land. In due time nlorc gravel will be added to tho thousands thous-ands of loads already on our streets. In tho meantime we will continue to pick our way and wish for the "good old summertime." Two pleasant parties, both in honor of Frank Traveler, who left Monday last on a mission to the cast, were given at the young man's home. The ilrst, on Wednesday night, was a complete com-plete surprise to him, while the other, Thursday, was attended principally by his own relatives, of which there arc many. Attended with sobbing, hand-shaking and goodbye kisses, the llrst pair of quite a number of our boys left on the early train for Salt Lake and their missionary fields this morning. A good sized crowd saw them off. Heber Flogan and family arc preparing pre-paring to go to Sugar City, Idaho, to make that place their new home. Mr. Hoganwlll leave as soon as he can dispose of his property hero and near the mill, all of which he Is offering at a eiy low price. Roe Hrlght and wife, formerly of this place but now living In Teton city. Idaho, who have been visiting here this winter will return this week to their home. Mis. W. W. Hendricks and little one left last week for Ilaker City to Join her husband. Mrs Hendricks has found good employment there and they Intend to stay for somo time. The Journal, after a long silence, has now a correspondent in this city for their paper. Tho new penman Is Otto J Monson. Mr. Solon Harbor, of Logan, was busy here last week making "pantry" deliveries |
