Show FOR CHANGE IN SALARIES. .Talk of Alteration . in Emoluments Paid to Statesmen. There is considerable talk in Washington Wash-ington this winter regarding the salary sal-ary of members of congress, though there is no immediate prospect of legislation on the subject. Some advocate ad-vocate the cutting off of all perquisites and the payment of a fiat salary of $7,500 instead of $5,000, as at present, leaving the members to buy their own stationery and hire their own clerks; also to deprive them of mileage, which is 10 cents per mile each way for each session. The clerks at present get $100 per month and the stationery allowance al-lowance is $125 annually. It is especially espe-cially pointed out that the compensation compensa-tion as to mileage is unfair, as the statesman who lives in Maryland or Virginia, for example, receives only a meager stipend on that account, whereas some statesmen from the far West receive over $400. |
