Fertile eggs f-oni vigorous vigor-ous breeding stock are necessary In order to obtain good hatehes. Free range for the breeders is most desirable for the production of fertile eggs with vigorous germs, but all eggs pioduced from such bens should not be used for Incubutlon. Kggs that ure ubiiorniully small and poorly shaped or tho,e having thin or ery poor shells should be eliminated. Dirty eggs or those budly soiled should not be used. If It Is found necessary to set slightly soiled eggs they may be cleaned by rubbing lightly with a dump cloth, cure being taken not to rub off any more of the natural bloom than Is neces-sury. neces-sury. It Is never advisable to uso for hatching eggs tliut ure more than two weeks old. In freezing weather eggs should be collected two or three times u day so as to prevent their being chilled. Neither a hen nor an Incubator Incuba-tor will hatch strong chicks from eggs containing weak germs or from those which have not received proper cure. In preparing the nest for the sitting hen, put from three to four Inches of damp eurth or-a piece of grass sod In the bottom of tho nest before the nesting material Is put In to provide moisture. When Uie hen becomes d broody, and before she Is transferred f to tho nest for sitting, she should be c dusted with Insect powder or sodium t fluorldo. In doing this hold the hen j by the feot with the head down, work- t log the powder well Into the feathers. When the eggs ' begin to hatch, the hen should bo con- ! lined and not disturbed until the hutching hutch-ing is complete. If she becomes restless rest-less remove tho chicks us they are hatched aud keep them In a warm place until the hatch Is complete, when all should be relumed to the mother hen. |
