Tho two branches of tho legislature held short sessions yesterday, the son-ate son-ate because thero was so llttlo business presented for consideration, and the house adjourned early out of respect to Representative Chrlstlanson who had received a telegram announcing tho death of his father. An Important part of the senate proceedings pro-ceedings was tho introduction of a memorial to congress for legislation leading to the amendment of the constitution con-stitution of tho United State, so that senators will bo cleoted by direct vote of tho people. Tho thirteenth bill was Introduced In tho senate and tho forty-soventh forty-soventh In tho house. In the senatorial contest three ballots bal-lots were taken, the last one resulting: McCuno, 27; King, 14( John E. lisglcy, 13; Howell, 1; Cannon, 7; absent, 1. Bait Lake, Jan. 19. Yesterday closed the first third of the legislature sixty-day sixty-day session, but to date very little real progress bus been made with tho work of law-making. A small amount of business was transacted yesterday In both houses. The university site changing bill, oarrylng a large appropriation, appro-priation, and a bill to rolmburso the citizens of Cedar City, who expended 80,000 for the heating and ventilating apparatus, which Is not deemed a part of tho building ceded to the state, for tho southern branch normal school, were Introduced in both the senate and the house. The house passed Representative Repre-sentative Rcdd's substitute memorial to congress for the restraint of the lawless, roving baud of Indians, who make periodical raids In San Juan county, and Representative O'Nell'a memorial, praying for the restoration to the public domain of a part of tho forest reservation in Uintah county, was presented and referred. This bill makes tho theft of a calf or sheep, or other range of farm animal, grand larceny. H. II. No. 37, authorizing sheriffs to collect commission on sales under execution when the property Is bid In by a judgement creditor, came up on third reading and was passed by unanimous vote. The house in its half-hour session received two new bills, two petitions from Weber county relating to Irrigation and school matters, and filed two recommendations recom-mendations for passage of bills. The senate passed two bills yesterday, No. S, providing for scrvico of summons from justices' courts; and No. 13, transferring trans-ferring Summit county from the Third to the First judicial district. A bill was Introduced providing for tho extermination ex-termination or capture of the outlaws In eastern Utah, and appropriating 85,000 for that purpose. Houso bill No. 7 was passed by the house. The bill provides that alfcases appealed to the supreme court must bo tried on tho transcript filed, oud no abstract, printed or othorwlse, of tho transcript or record shall bo required by the supreme court. Tha San Juan memorial was passed In the senato yesterday, undone new bill was introduced, to change the law so that county commissioners shall be elected for a term of four years, and arranging their retirement so that an election may bo hold every two years.
