H It will be in commemoration of the B ndvont of the baud of Mormon pioneer-, H led by Brigain Young into the valley ol B the Orcat Suit Lake on July 24, 18-17 H Tiie settlement made by thorn was thu H dawn of western civilization. From it H grow the great empire which now ex- H tends from the Mississippi river to the H Pnciflu Ocean . The hntints of the then H bloodthirsty Indians are now occupied H by thriving cities; their hunttnggrounds H are dotted by fertile farms, and tho H mountain fastnesses which were their H strongholds are yielding annually H precious metals the values of which can H only be computed in the million-dollar H column. Siu rounding the site of tho H first camping grounds of 148 souls there B is a wealthy, beautiful and progressive B city of 00,000 people. trom that nucleus H Las grown a statu of 300,000 people, and H because of the hardihood and bravery H shown by the p.ionecrs of Utah the H magnillcunt empire known as the inter- B mountain country owes its existence. It H is therefore fitting that the central idea H of the celebration should bo to honor H the deeds of the pioneers by honoring H those who are left and their de- H cendents. B The celebration will be conducted by H a State commission and a portion of the H expense has been provided for by legis- H laiive enactments. It is the design ol H the commission, of which Hon. Spencer H Glawson is chairman, to expend not less m thaa 100,000. H ' At this time it is not possible to more H than outline tho features of the program.
