KATHERINE EDELMAN P 1830 1030 western newspaper union five copies of lincoln speech at gettysburg i abraham Lincol ns address at get unique among his speeches la itt many particulars one of which Is ahat there are in existence at ithe pres ent time no less than five coples copies of it in Lincol ns own handwriting in in only a few cases Is there a single copy of other speeches the first inaugural for instance was composed in springfield and set up in plea pica type in the office of the illinois state journal anaf a nd after some and the addition of a closing paragraph suggested by secretary seward was delivered from the corrected proof and not from the original manuscript so far as I 1 ilya am aware the manuscript was not brought away from springfield by lincoln nor preserved in the printing office the journal for many years lad had been accustomed to receiving editorials and other matter in his hand writing ting and nelt neither berthe the editor simeon francis nor any one of ills his compositors tools took thought that this was to become a document of historic interest and nd that the original would bo be valuable copy not preserved most of Lincol ns speeches it if written out met a like fate it if the copy comeback came cam aback eback from the office with the proof lincoln tossed it into the waste hasket li and no one rescued it after tie lie became president of course he knew and every one knew that bis big handwriting would le be in demand but ro no one looked tor for the time when his letter to general rooker would sell at auction for so mst most of his bis speeches breeches perished in the trie original manuscript perished in the very process of preserving them ti iq print ana ana of oc the that were preserved there to ig usually only one copy the ove copies of the gettysburg address two are IU the library of 0 congress oneff them Is mainly in lak ink ashett a sheet of paper headed with the usual executive mansion caption the other sheet Is ruled letter paper of the same size elze and with wide spaces between the lines it Is the paper that was commonly used in the white bouse tor speeches or documents akely to need and Is identical in quality with that used by the president tor for the second craft of the gettysburg speech and for the second inaugural the writing on the second sheet of the first draft ol of the address Is in pencil tho the pencil was 11 used sed also to erase a few words at the bottom of the first page the second library of Con congress gresa draft Is a fair copy of the first draft it la Is written wholly in ink without stopping here and now to gi give bemy my reasons I 1 believe that the first page of the first draft was written tn in ink before lincoln left washington if lie he completed this draft at the time and there was a second page in ink he became dissatisfied with 1 if and cast it aside I 1 think lie he wrote the second page in pencil in gettysburg probably on thead glit before the delivery 0 the address the second library of congress draft I 1 think was written in gettysburg on the mor morning ning of the delivery the place of writing was in the home of judge wills fee facing the file public square just to 10 dispose of a question which ts Is sure to rise whether lincoln did not write the address upon the back of an envelope eny elope on the train on his way from washington to gettysburg let me answer that he may havo have made a few penciled notes and tor for this purpose may have used the back afan of an envelope but he did not write the address as a whole tn in any such fashion in my judgment the two library of congress drafts were both ap 41 01 lit lincoln lincol dell 12 his bl speech at the dedication ol of the national al Cler at t gettysburg N november nh h IB 19 1803 arlton written before the delivery of the address of 0 the other three we the history they were eill all written after the address had bad been delivered five texts of speech the first two coples vary but tittle little from each other the last three copies vary but little from one on an other how they vary I 1 have set forth in an interlinear versions in my life of I lincoln the important f fact ct Is that we shave have five texts in Lincol ns handwriting no two of them exactly alike and that they fall clearly into two groupe Bri inie two in one and the earlier group three tn in the other alid add the later group and that we know in detail the history of the last three intermediate between these two groups in own hand are a number of other versions printed at the mae first of these Is the ax As sedated press report prepared by jo ja seph L GlI gilbert beit ne lie did not pretend to have taken down Lincol ns e exact words hut but reported the speech partly in shorthand and checked up tip in a hasty comparison with Lincol ns manuscript the second was a special report used in one philadelphia newspaper one cincinnati newspaper and in the local news newspaper in gettysburg it was a very poor report the third was na as I 1 judge the one report that tells us exactly what lincoln did say r it was made by charles halo hale of the boston advertiser oneff one of the official al massachusetts commissioners ills 1118 written affirmation to a gov a V john job n A andrew that lincoln spoke very slowly and that hale was able to get the precise wording is as good as the oath of a court stenographer certifying the accuracy of his version we know I 1 think what lincoln intended to say what he be did say what lie he was reported to have said and what be wished he had bad said surely Lincol Lincoln ns 6 words neither of the drafts of 0 Lincol ns manuscript made before the delivery of 0 f the address contains the two words under god noth both say that we here highly resolve that the nation shall have a new birth of freedom cut but every stenographic report good bad and indifferent says that the nation shall under god have a new birth of fre freedom edorn there was no common source from which all the reporters could have obtained those words but from Lincol ns own lips at the time of delivery it will not do to say aay that stanton suggested those words worda after Lincol ns return to washington for the words were telegraphed by nt at least three reporters on the afternoon of delivery and published all over the country nor will it answer to suy say that seward suggested them the night before as words that would convey to the people assembled a suggestion of piety tor for john G gives a clear history of the writing of the second draft on the morning of delivery and the second draft does docs not include those words but all three of Lincol Als copies that were made after the address had been delivered do contain tho the words or of the three or more reports matle made while he was speaking under god lincoln said those words the several independent reports that went to the wires at once agree that lie ho said them and lincoln certainly wished to be remembered as having said them for he wrote them into every one df the three copies which he made mada for or permanent record where then did lincoln get those words lie ile got them I 1 think out of his own stock of phraseology lie ile was not given to tle careless use of r rp legious phrases lut but this one he be used at other times it carno came to him as lie he sat on the plat platform forni at Gettys gettysburg bu rg inspired by the sense of solemnity th that nt the occasion brought upon min him th the a journey the reception of the night 1 he a fore the parade the sight of the but
