Show Youth out accent on beauty with planter-anti-litter projects 4-Hers, Scouts, Girl Scouts, Candy Stripers, Cedar High School Thespian Club and other groups proved once again last Saturday that youth, organizing and working together can make a significant contribution to their city. Approximately one hundred thirty youth and their leaders met to put out 65 plants of yellow marigolds on Cedar City's main street. They also cleaned and swept much of main street and launched an anti-litter campaign. Since its inception last year, the Community Pride Program initiated and being sponsored through the Iron County Extension, Ex-tension, has helped youty to participate in numberous activities ac-tivities dealing with community service. The project of the planters as well as some other smaller projects have helped the youth to assess needs in their community and then act on their own to meet those needs. That the youth groups have felt beautification of their city a major need is significant for it reflects a positive attitude about their environment. The steering committee for the Youth Beautification this year has been Carolyn Jorgensen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Jorgensen chairman, and Carolyn Chamberlain, Shawnee Christensen, Brenda Palmer, Curt Cravens, and Chris Bishop as committee members. They with help have supervised the planting and assisted in the placing of the planters on the street and they will also supervise super-vise the watering, and the storing of the planters this fall. The youth were assisted by a Youth Conservation Corp under the direction of Cecil Jorgensen of the BLM. The interest shown in this project by citizens and businessmen has been very gratifying. Eight families sponsored planters this year as well as 42 youth groups. The i Plaza merchants bought seven new planters and State Bank of Southern Utah purchased ten more. After the planters were placed on the street and the cleanup project was finished the youth "met at the park where Miss Jorgensen presented the planters and flowers to Mayor Kerry Jones for the city. Mayor Jones thanked the youth and said that it was gratifying to see such cooperation and activity. He stated that he felt they were setting a good example to other citizens of the community. A continental breakfast was served to the youth by Cedar Products Inc. a new industry of the area. Mr. Louis Szepi, manager greeted the youth and complimented them on their iniative and interest in their community. A tour of several places of interest was taken by some of the youth after the breakfast Because of the interest being shown not only locally but nation wide in the anti-litter campaign waged last year, the youth decided to form a separate committee this year for their anti-litter campaign. Antinette Hunter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Antone Hunter, is chairman of this committee with Elizabeth Jones as co-chairman. Other members of this committee are Brenda Stones and Reed Cardon. This committee launched their litter-letter campaign last Saturday morning asking that each member present send back one litter-letter this summer. The letters were given out at this time. Each youth who received one will be looking for litter bugs. Approximately twelve letters have been sent already from litter picked up in the early morning clean-up Saturday and also from litter observed being thrown from cars. Some of the letters contain cigarette butts. These letters will remind citizens V 9 in a nice way littering is a misdemeanor mis-demeanor and ask that they please use the litter bag enclosed in the future. Postage for the litter-letters are furnished by those sending them. No record is being kept of offenders. Another committee was formed for-med to do a survey of the city to ascertain the desires of the citizens in regard to beautification of the city and other environemntal related problems. The youth felt that if thev wer poine to be able to make a significant contribution in this direction they should know the attitudes and desires of the citizens. This survey sample has been prepared free of charge by Dr. Reid Gertsen of Utah State University. Sometime later this summer the youth will survey approximately 270 homes and businesses for their report. Lori Webb, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Webb is the chairman of this committee with Cindy Chamberlain as co-chairman. V |
