This step up from 2A to 3A will make many changes, not only in football, but in all sports activities during the year and for years to come. New Status The first major implication is that the Redmen and the Dixie Flyers, who have been placed in the same status, will, for all intent and "purpose become a league unto themselves with the winner in the home and home series, and possibly playoff should they tie advancing directly into the state 3A playoffs. But for the outset Coach Bishop is excited about his team. "We have overall good speed, but are small in stature" he comments. Prior to the opening game agaiast Basic Coach Bishop rates Tom Mace as the outstanding player for the Redmen. Mace will be the middle line backer on defense and is also expected to be a running back offense. On the defensive line Coach Bishop and his assistance will be depending on Mike Adams, Paul Redington and Scott Slack. Defensive Backfield In the defensive backfield linebackers will probably be Mace, Lee Holmes and Joe Wells with Matt Galloway and Richard Bauer as the defensive backs. "The one probably we face here is size," Bishop indicates. "We have speed in the defensive backfield, but we lack size. These boys, all under six feet could have some trouble with tall receivers," he commented. On the offensive line it appears that Adams, Redington and Slack will be called upon to go both ways and they will be assisted by returning lettermen Ken Bentley and Jeff Anderson. Vieing for the starting position at tight end are Bill Engle and Lee Holmes with Brad Blackner and Vance Matheson solidifying the wide receiver post. Offensive Backfield At quarterback two young men are expected to see action including in-cluding senior Scott Burns and junior Charles Judd. In the running back slot the coaching staff feels confident of the abilities of Kim Neilson, Bryan Jackson, Robert Morris and Mace. |
