Show T-Bird thinclads place third in conference Strong performances in the long jump and the high hurdles were big factors in pulling Southern Utah State College's track team to a third place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Con-ference championships. The Thunderbirds were figured to probably finish fourth in the five-team meet Saturday at Golden, Colorado. Finishing ahead of the T-Birds were Adams State, 181, and host Colorado Mines, 132. SUSC scored 92 points for third place. Western State, 83, and Western New Mexico, 63, finished behind the 'Birds. Only one first place was the final meet of the year included in-cluded Carl Cochrane (third, shot put); Taylor (fourth, javelin); Chuck Comeford, Bob Nash and Dan Block (fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, steeplechase); L. D. Shakespeare (third, mile and 880), and Russ Brown (fifth, 880 )s. Others placing were Whitaker (sixth, 440); K. Brown (fifth, 100); Hedlund (fourth, triple jump); Alan Lewis (fourth, high jump), and Keith Fenstermaker (sixth, high jump). recorded by the Thunderbirds; it was picked up by Dan Hedlund in the long jump. Ken Brown finished sedond and Dave Lewis fifth in the same event. In the high hurdles, three SUSC athletes earned points. Hedlund finished second; Kirk Taylor was third, and freshman Rob Jensen came in fifth. Barry Whitaker, third; Hedlund, fifth, and Taylor, sixth, also gave SUSC three places in the 440 yard intermediate in-termediate hurdles. Other T-Birds earning points in |
