Show Janice Mitchell qualifies for Utah Senate Youth Competition PAROWAN - Janice Mitchell, senior student at Parowan High School, has qualified as a finalist in the Utah Senate Youth Competition. This is an annual contest sponsored by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation and the United States Senate, One student leader is selected from each school on the basis of a competitive examination on Constitutional government and current American Problems, grade point average, and leadership qualities. The candidates can-didates then meet at the State Capitol for the state level competition. During the competition com-petition the candidates are judged in oral group discussion all morning, on five minute extemporaneous speeches in the afternoon. Judging is also made on their qualifying exams and grade point averages. Nine finalists are selected and are further questioned by a panel of judges from the State Department Depart-ment of Education. During this final round the students are given an impromptu speech subject to which they address themselves for 3-5 minutes. Janice was one of nine finalists chosen October 21 in Salt Lake City for the 1976-77 Senate Youth Program. There were seven boys and two girls who competed in the last round. From this group two Utah JANICE MITCHELL students will be chosen to make an all-expense paid trip to Washington DC during the week of January 29 February 5, 1977. In addition to paying all expenses for the trip, the Hearst Foundation Foun-dation also awards a $1,500 scholarship to each of the delegates to the University of their choice. Announcement of the two Utah delegates will be made in Washington DC by the Hearst Foundation sometime in December. |
