Show CHS Students experience Mock Trial Originally conceived by the Cedar High Youth Coordinating Council and put into reality through the efforts of John Graff, probation officer, a mock trial was held at Cedar High School Wednesday. Cedar High principal Gerald Hawley reported that feedback from the students witnessing the learning experience is that it was very enjoyable. He said about 80 percent of the student body was able to witness the trial. "It was designed to let the kids see the legal process and to what lengths the law goes to protect the accused," Hawley said, adding that while some students may have considered the trial long, it was condensed considering the length of actual trials. The case involved a contrived vandalism van-dalism at the high school, following clues found at the scene, Sheriff Schoppmann and Chief Bolton were able to apprehend a suspect, to which they testified. "Everything in the case was based on vandalism that had happened in the past," Hawley said. While vandalism at the high school is down somewhat this year, Hawley said, it continues to be a problem and it is hoped the trial will have some effect. LAW PROCESS DEMONSTRATED. Attorney for the state, Ralph Benson, gives his opening remark to the jury, made up of students and adults, in the recent mock trial at Cedar High. The case involved a contrived con-trived vandalism, and was designed to show the legal process to students. |
