Show Federal Fu ids requested for Highland Area The Governor suggested that because of the drought the budget may have to reflect a change in priorities when the legislature meets in January. A request for funds to assist residents in the Highland Drive area of Cedar City will be made through the our Corners Commission, Governor Scott Matheson told political leaders and newly elected officials at a noon luncheon in Cedar City Friday. The Governor has requested information in-formation on the survey being conducted con-ducted by the Geological Service and indicated that he will present the result of that report to the Four Corners Regional Commission for' consideration and possible assistance relative to the soil problem that has been identified in Cedar City. A large area has been identified as being involved either directly or indirectly in-directly in the "hydrocompaction" area, Mayor Kerry Jones told the group. The study was made possible through a grant through the Four Corners Regional Commission. Governor Matheson said the Commission Com-mission will analyze and determine what it can do to address the problem, and indicated that he would keep all elected officials advised on the issue. In addition the Governor identified the drought as another major concern for the entire state. "We're not having a normal winter," he told the group "and it is my intention to begin now to prepare for the coming year and the problems to be faced in the state should we not get the necessary moisture this winter." 'He told the audience that conservation con-servation measures need to be considered con-sidered now and not at a late date when they might not be effective. "Weather forecasters continue to predict a normal winter. They indicated in-dicated that if we had storm by November 15 we would be all right. Now they are telling us that if we have snow by December 15 we will be all right. I believe that we can safely say that we are not having a normal winter and we had better begin now to prepare for extended drought conditions con-ditions in Utah," he said. |
