Show Otto Fife, Outdoorsman, Civic and Church Leader dies; Services Held Prelude and postlude music was by Valaine Bladen. Interment was in the Cedar City Cemetery under 'he direction of Boyer's Southern Utah Mortuary. The grave was dedicated by Lee Fife. ' Otto was born Nov. 1, 1900 in Cedar City to Joseph Smith and Emily Kate Rott Fife. He married Violet Bailey Fife Oct. 24, 1926 in Los Angeles, Calif. The marriage was later solemnized in the Mesa LDS Temple on Oct. 13,1930 He is survived by his wife, Violet,Cedar City; two daughter, Mrs. Bevan (Deloris) Jones, Brussels, Belgium and Mrs. Don(Yvonne) Woodlief, Beaverton, Ore. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren; two brothers and a sister: Mrs. Rulon (LaVern) Esplin, Fruitland,Ore.;Wilford Fife St. George and Carl Fife, Funeral services for Otto Root Fife, 78, were held Saturday, June' 2 at the : Cedar Stake '.Center. Fife died at his residence . Tuesday, May 29. An authority on the famous Zion Narrows Otto had made 60 trips through the narrows. An enthusiastic hiker and mountain climberjje tried to j climb a new mountain each year, sandwiched in between : his many commitments as an after dinner speaker. He especially spellbound youth groups with his "true" stories of the great southwest. south-west. Raised and educated in Cedar City he graduated from Branch Normal School,now Southern Utah State College and in colm-mencement colm-mencement exercies June 2, 1978 he was awarded an honorary degree by SUSC. He also attended University of Utah. Otto served as Iron County Sheriff for eight years and retired in 1968. His retirement lasted two weeks before he accepted a postion with the United States Postal Service ,: in a rural route which took him to Zion Canyon. m An active member of the LDS Chruch he served as as a High Councilor and a High Priest Quorum leader and teacher. He served a mission for the LDS Chruch in the Swiss-German Mission. Active in Boy Scouts he has served in many capacities in the Cedar Breaks District and was the recipient of the coveted OTTO R.FIFE Silver Beaver Award in 1975. Speakers at the services conclude Joseph C. Felix, Lee Kay and remarks by Bishop L. Dee Watson. Conducting was Bud S. Riddle and a eulogy was presented by Marlene Fife Riddle. Family prayer was offered by Bevan Jones. Invocation was by Brent Palmer and the benediction by Boyd Bladen. Musical selections included in-cluded and organ medley by Reed Berrett, a piano solo, "Pavane" by Colleen Fife and a vocal solo, "My Friend," by Blaine Johnson. |
