Show Ella B. Leigh obsenes 100 Birthday ;. '( ': "tV.ii Ella B. Leigh disappointed when the Stars left Salt Lake City and last year she indicated that she was rooting for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, although the Yankees of New York City were the eventual winners. Ella B. Leigh, will celebrate the observance of her 100 birthday with an open house at her home at 94 South 100 West in Cedar Ctiy on Sun., June 10. Friends and relatives are invited to visit i her on that day. A native of Iron County, Mrs. Leigh was born June 13, 1879 in Kanarraville and has resided in Iron County throughout her life. As a child, H she attended schools in Kanarraville and Cedar City. She was the first recipient of a v diploma from the ' Branch Normal School, now Southern Utah State College, in the first commencement exercises of the institution in 1900 and is the only living member of that original class of six students. Other members of the graduating class besides Mrs. Leigh-then Ella Berry-were Berry-were Joseph Tr Wilkerson, Jr., J.S. Dalley and Amelia Dalley, brother and sister; Emma Gardner and Alice Redd. When just four years of age Mrs. Leigh's father, William Berry, was serving a mission in Tennessee and was killed by a mob. His body was returned to Salt Lake City for funeral services ser-vices and brought to Kanarraville for interment. During her century of living Mrs. Leigh states that transportation has brought about the biggest changes. Raised in the horse and buggy era, she saw the coming of the railroad, the arrival of thef. . first automobiles to the present day capabilities of the jet airliners. "The college has contributed con-tributed vastly to the area," Mrs. Leigh states. She emphasizes the importance of the college as providing the necessary ingredients for the continued growth of the community and area. Following her graduation from BNS, Mrs. Leigh attended at-tended the University of Utah in Salt Lake City where she received her teaching certificate and returned to Cedar City where she taught for two years. Listed among her students was Warren Bulloch who indicates that "she taught him well." She married W.H. (Harry) Leigh on April 27, 1903. They had .. 10 children and seven .are living. She also has a sister, Minnie Rowe, who is 98 . and a resident of Provo. Mr. Leigh passed away on March 7,1959. To this day Mrs. Leigh reports that she has no serious "aches or pains" but does have some trouble with her eyes. An avid sports fan she was |
