Show In ouropinion - Fund raisers show real community spirit Over $10,000 for worthy causes and to help a fellow human being was raised in Cedar City Saturday in a display of community cooperation that has not been matched for many years. Efforts of the Valley View Health Care Foundation to provide Infant Care Equipment for the Valley View Medical Center was responsible for the raising of over $6000. In a separate fund raising activity, ac-tivity, conducted by the BPOE Lodge No. 1556 of Cedar City, $3600 was raised to assist in the hospital expenses of Scott Nelson who has been hospitalized in Salt Lake City since June of this year from injuries in-juries suffered in a horseback -riding accident. In both cases the response to human needs was most dramatic and worthy of commendation for those who took the effort to draw the people of Cedar City and the entire surrounding area together in common causes. Mrs. Joye Corry, who along with her husband, Kent, serve as Infant Care Service coordinators for the WM Foundation pointed out the gratification that comes when "people pull together. It's been a long time," she said "since such a community effort has been undertaken un-dertaken and we are most gratified by the results." The Bazaar was apparently the brainstorm of Susan Foster who served as chairman and along with that a baby contest was held that drew over $1200 alone. "That's a lot of money when you consider 10 cents for each vote cast," Mrs. Corry stated. The Baby Contest was under the direction of Mrs. Juanita Wilcock. For the Elks Lodge the fund raising dance and activities were a cooperative effort of not only the Elks but many Cedar City businesses and individuals, who contributed prizes. The project was under the direction of VeeWadsworth and members of his Investigation Committee. There are other evidences of the willingness of people to help. But Saturday was, as Mrs. Corry stated, an event that brought together people from all religious denominations, all civic and charitable groups as well as individuals in-dividuals who genuinely "just wanted to help." It's gratifying to see the cooperative effort, the evidence of a community pulling together for mutal interest and betterment. |
