In the coucnil race Marchant had a total of 1,225 votes and Stratton captured 1,184 of the votes. Sherrell (Jack) Sawyers, the Democratic candidate upset incumbent L. Kerry Jones, who was seeking his second term as head of city government. govern-ment. The two candidates for council positions, Harold Shirley and Barbara Starr, also scored smashing victories in their bid for election against incumbent Robert Stratton and newcomer Don Marchant, candidates on the Republican ticket. Garnering the most votes in the election was Harold Shirley, Democractic candidate for the Council. He tallied a total of 2,318 votes and carried every one of the 16 voting districts in Cedar City in his bid for the post. In second place and winning a seat on the Council with a substancial lead over the Republican candidates was Mrs. Starr with a total of 1,707 votes.
