The Birch Log NOW Attacks The Family by John F. McManus Belmont, Massachusetts Thirteen years ago, the so-called feminist movement got its start with the publication of Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique. Mys-tique. Three years later, author Friedan helped to form the National Na-tional Organization for Women (NOW) and served as its first president. Laughed at by many because of its demands that language lan-guage be made genderless, NOW has pushed ahead with programs that even its members admit are revolutionary. NOW and Homosexuality At the NOW convention last October, a split developed within with-in the group when New York lawyer Karen DeCrow was elected president. Founder Friedan Frie-dan formed a splinter faction within the group, which she calls Women's Surge. A key issue separating sep-arating the combatants is how far NOW should go in promoting promot-ing homosexuality. Both factions fac-tions support "gay rights" but not with the same degree of intensity. in-tensity. Friedan's Surge wants to soft-pedal gay acceptance for fear of alienating housewives. DeCrow's majority claims that it would be wrong to "renege on gay rights," because support for homosexuals has been NOW policy pol-icy for five years. The support for gays is perhaps per-haps as good an issue as any to demonstrate NOW's radical nature. na-ture. In a society which has become be-come almost "unshockable," the proliferation of homosexuality is still considered repulsive. And rightly so, for such a practice is a violation of the very nature of the human species. If NOW has its way and reproduction becomes be-comes passe, civilization, and indeed in-deed the human race, will have committed suicide. But NOW's position on gays is only one of its radical views. In 1973, the group published a compilation of its positions in a booklet aptly titled Revolution: Tomorrow is NOW. Consider the radical positions it takes in favor fa-vor of government-funded 1 abortion, sterilization, and con traception on demand; contraceptive contra-ceptive and abortion counseling in schools; free government-financed child-care centers; elimination elim-ination of women's exemption from any draft; passage of the subversive Equal Rights Amendment; Amend-ment; acceleration of sex education educa-tion in the schools; establishment establish-ment of the function of raising children as a "political priority"; and so on. Any resemblance between be-tween all that and already existing exist-ing practices in the Soviet Union is not merely a figment of your imagination. Importance of the Family It has always been our belief that the most deadly acts of destruction being perpetrated against our civilization are those aimed at the family. For it is the varied relationships, responsibilities, responsibil-ities, and opportunities existing in a family that have alway brought out the best that human beings have to offer, and have typically made each member of a family a better person and, consequently, a better citizen. The fact that any worthwhile civilization has always been built on its strong families is no mere accident. We therefore have no difficulty diffi-culty at all in concluding that the National Organization for Women is waging war on the family. If NOW is successful, the family will fade into obscurity, ob-scurity, and so will our nation and our civilization. Tax-Exempt Status NOW makes another crusade out of removing tax-exempt status from churches, particularly particu-larly from the Catholic Church because of its opposition to abortion. But NOW enjoys the privilege of tax-exemption itself, it-self, while it works to subvert the very foundations of America. Amer-ica. How often has it been shown that our own government is working hand in glove with our nation's enemies! NOW ought to be repudiated, and a goqd way to start would be to cause an end to such governmental sanction. 7976 The John Birch Society Features FOR INFORMATION CONCERNING THE BIRCH LOG, CALL: BILL REAGAN 586-6226 ' : -r |
