Show Science curricula improvement workshop to be held at College The first of two special science sci-ence curricula improvement workshops to be conducted at Southern Utah State College under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation will 'begin July 10 and continue con-tinue through July 28, it was announced by Prof e s s o r George LeBaron, workshop di rector. The three week program will be directed at elementary school teachers, and principals and will involve 36 participants' partici-pants' from southern Utah, Nevada, and northern Arizona. Training will be geared to two NSF supported curricula "A Process Approach (AA-AS)," (AA-AS)," and "Science' TttiHcu- mm improvement aiuay IS)." According to Prof. LeBaron at the end of the workshop each school district selected to take part in the program will use one of the two curricula cur-ricula in a "pilot classroom" for the following year. A follow-up consulting program will continue throughout the year. ' ;". , ',.;;.. f The second NSF sponsored workshop will 'begin July 31 and continue through August 25. Participants will include 30 college science teachers, college teachers education instructors, in-structors, and school district curriculum supervisors, primarily pri-marily from Utah, Nevada, and Arizona'. Director will be Dr, Wesley Larsen. This workshop will be devoted de-voted to "Science, A Process Approach" and will stress leadership preparation for supplementation of the SCIS (Science Curriculum Improvement Improve-ment Study), AAAS (American (Ameri-can Association for the Advancement Ad-vancement of Science, kindergarten kinder-garten through sixth grade), and ESS (Elementary School Science), Dr. Larsen said.. ' Regarding the program, Dr. Larsen explained that each participant will learn the content con-tent and philosophy of the projects by teaching children, handling equipment, and doing do-ing experiments. ; He said that the final week of the workshop will be a practicum where each participant partic-ipant will concentrate through individualized teaching on material and strategies from a single curriculum, project. ' Prof. LeBaron and Dr. Larsen Lar-sen will both participate as instructors in the workshops. Other instructors are Dr. Lee Morrell, Dr. Russell Anderson, and Prof. David Braegger. All are members of the SUSC School of Science faculty. |
