Show Saturday, May 24 VFW to hold Buddy Poppy day . The 1969 Annual Sale of Buddy Poppies will be held in Cedar City May 24 by the VFW Post 3510 and Auxiliary Auxili-ary " "under the direction of chairman, Mrs. Norma Green and Commander Warren War-ren Green, The idea of selling poppies pop-pies to the American public to support a national welfare wel-fare program originated in 1922 with the VFW. It was the first Veterans organization organiza-tion to promote a nationwide poppy selling campaign. The idea took root when Madam Guerin of France, inspired in-spired by the symbolic beauty beau-ty of the poppies growing in Flanders, sought the cooperation cooper-ation of the VFW in selling poppies made in France to aid the disabled and needy war veterans. The Veterans of Foreign Wars established a workshop in Pittsburg, Pa. staffed by disabled veterans. These men assembled the materials from which the flowers are fash ioned, they operate the ma- I chine that cuts out the heavy leaves of the poppy then by hand put them together. The term "Buddy Poppy" has been registered with the U. S. Patent Office as the VFW trade mark guaranteeing guarantee-ing the genuine "Buddy Peppy" as assembled by disabled dis-abled and needy veterans. I After establishing the name, explained Cedar City Commander, Warren Green, : the VFW authorized its various vari-ous state departments to have disabled veterans make Buddy Poppies in VA hospitals hospit-als and Soldiers homes. Every president since Calvin Cal-vin Coolidge has endorsed the sale, and the sale of poppies has received commendation from leaders in all walks of life. The 1969 Buddy Poppy sale is primarily concerned with raising funds for three major welfare projects. They include in-clude local veterans welfare work, which consumes approximately ap-proximately two-thirds of the proceeds collected; the maintenance main-tenance of nationwide veteran veter-an welfare work and rehabilitation rehabil-itation service, along with support of the VFW National Home for orphans of deceased war veterans at Eaton Rap-1 ids, Mich. |
