The en-tire en-tire Westminster team picked up 18 yards rushing against th T-Birds Saturday. ' The Thunderbirds of South-em South-em Utah State College lost their third conference game of the year Saturday as the fourth quarter plague struck again to give Westminster a 14 to 10 victory. All three of the conference losses for the T-Birds have I come in the final minutes of the fourth quarter and have been by margins of less than six points. At Westminster it was a matter of penalties, breaks and an offense that couldn't move inside the 20 yard line that set the T-Birds back. Statistically it was a T-Bird ball game as the T-Birds lead in every department. Southern Utah picked up 15 first downs to the Parsons 10, 191 yards passing against 98 for Westminster West-minster and 77 rushing a-gainst a-gainst 18 for a total of 268 yards total offense for the T-Birds T-Birds and 116 for the Parsons. The SUSC defense has to be given credit for one of the finest performances this writer writ-er has seen. Several times the T-Birds were deep in Parson territory but unable to capitalize on good field position as has been the case all year. This week Azuza Pacific comes to Thunderbird Stadium Stadi-um in a Saturday afternoon encounter. Both Parson touchdowns came after crucial penalties were assessed against Southern Utah. During the first half of play it. looked as if Southern Utah would thoroughly tromp the Parsons for their homecoming. On the first series of plays by Southern Utah the T-Birds1 drove over for the TD with Rick Orr carrying the ball in-to in-to the end zone. The play was i set up by a pass from quarter. back Buck Paopao to Ken Dimiek. Bill McKane kicked the extra point and the T-Birds T-Birds were ahead 7-0. In the first quarter West-1 minster was able to pick up two points on a safety as the Parsons caught Paopao in the end zone after a penalty had set the T-Birds back to their own ten. The final T-Bird score came on a 28-yard field goal by Mc. Kane after the T-Birds had moved to the Parson 11 yard line. The halftime score stood at 10-2 for the T-Birds. In the third quarter the continuing radn which had hampered the Southern Utah passing attack throughout the game became even worse and both teams were stimied on offense. In the fourth quarter the T-Bird defense continued to perform superbly and it looked look-ed as though the T-Birds were all set for their second conference con-ference win. But then disaster struck. The T-Birds had the Parsons stopped on their own 16 yard line, fourth down and 9 yards for the first down when another 15 yard penalty was assessed against them. This gave the Parsons a first down and on the next play Jim Phillips threw a 69 yard TD pass to John Papanokolas to put the Parsons back in the ball game. A two point conversion con-version failed and the score stood 10-8 for Southern Utah. The fatal blow came after a punt return by the Thunder-birds Thunder-birds to their own 25 yard line. On that plav another 15 yard penalty was marked off against the T-Birds putting them on the 10 yard mark. Two plays later a fumble by |
