Show Parowan High students can register now to narticioate in Merit Scholarship plan Parowan. High School students stud-ents who expect to complete their secondary school requirements re-quirements and to enter college col-lege in 1971 can register now to participate In the 1970-71 National Merit Scholarship Program, Bruce Decker, principal, prin-cipal, announced this week. The first step for all students stud-ents . who wish to enter the nationwide Merit Scholarship competition is to take the National Na-tional Merit Scholarship qualifying qual-ifying Test (NMSQT). The tost will be given in the school at 9 a. m. Saturday, Feb. 11, or Tuesday, FVb. 17, 1970. Taking the NMSQT is also the first step for students who wish to participate in other scholarship programs administered admin-istered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The programs include the National Nation-al Achievement Scholarship program for outstanding Negro Ne-gro students and Special Scholarship Scho-larship programs administered administer-ed by NMSC for business and industrial firms. NMSQT participants pay a $1.25 test fee. When the test is given on a Saturday, the school may charge an additional addi-tional fee of up to $1.25 to cover administrative costs of testing on a nonsehool day. If an unusually promising stu- dent is unable to pay the $1.25 test fee, it will be paid by NMSC at the request of the principal. When his NMSQT scores are reported, each participating participat-ing student will receive a handbook to help him understand under-stand his scores and compare his test performance with that of other high school students across the country. The handbook, hand-book, which contains information inform-ation about making college choices and financing a college col-lege education, is furnished as a part ol reporting the student's test results. Other interpretive materials are sent to the school. The highest-scoring students stud-ents in each state will be named Merit Program semi-finalists semi-finalists and will be eligible for Merit Scholarship consideration. consid-eration. In addition to the National Na-tional Merit Scholarships financed fi-nanced by.'NHSC, more than 400 business corporations, col-leges,, col-leges,, foundations, professional profession-al associations, unions, trusts, other organizations, and individuals in-dividuals offer scholarships through the Merit Program.
