The window had, been broken and patched up with a piece of tin on the inside of the iron bars which are placed over the basement base-ment windows. This tin had been cut away, and every indication was to the effect that the culprit deliberately attempted at-tempted to set the factory on fire. In this corner was a lot of paper stored and the fellow who threw the lighted paper into the factory must have known something of the proper place to get the best results with his fire. The fire department made a quick run and succeeded in quenching the flames before a great deal of damage was done. The fire had secured a good start on the joists and celling of the basement. The fire and water did a great deal of damage to the paper stored jn this part of the factory. President Geo. A. Startup and employes em-ployes made a careful Investigation of the attempt to burn the factory and their conclusion was that the fire was of incendiary origin. A sheet of tin which covered a window in the corner of the building where the fire started, was found with a piece cut out, which would admit of some combustible being thrown into the room. This was in good condition Saturday night, and it is supposed it was cut Sunday morning and probably the material which caused the fire was placed in the building then. It may have been a time fuse. The loss has not yet been determined. It was mainly caused by water and smoke and a close examination examina-tion will have to be made before an exact statement of the loss can be given. Mr. Startup states that it will run into thousands. It Is fully covered by Insurance. i |
