The College of Southern Utah Board of Trustees award-. award-. ed the school permission to accept ac-cept a year's research grant to study senior citizens' attitdues toward use of time at their monthly meeting conducted by Chairman Warren H. Bulloch at the Hotel Utah in Salt Lake City last Thursday, March 16. During the meeting, the Board also approved an academic aca-demic rank and tenure policy for the college faculty, made appointments to the staff, authorized advancement of $1,500, when needed, to the new athletic conference in which CSU is involved, okeyed a proposed contract with the State Department of Education Educa-tion for production of television televi-sion tapes, and heard a progress pro-gress report on the CSU Library Li-brary Fund Drive. The research project in the area of psychology is the first venture of this kind for CSU, according to President Royden C Braithwaite. The purpose of the project is to find the present pre-sent status and feelings of those over retirement age in rural Southern Utah communities commun-ities regarding the use of time. Total project budget is $13,-680 $13,-680 with $9,900 coming from a Health, Education and Welfare Department grant administered administer-ed through the Utah Council on Aging. Other sources will provide the remaining funds. The study will be conducted by Professor Vern K. Kupfer and Leonard Witt in the Division Divi-sion of Behavioral and Social Sciences. Additional project personnel include one or two students trained in statistics, five students from the departments depart-ments of psychology and soci-alogy soci-alogy to act as members of the interviewing team, and five senior citizens, selected with the cooperation and aid of the local Committee on Aging, who will join the student interviewers. in-terviewers. It is suspected, according to the project proposal, that many senior citizens no longer feel useful as productive residents resi-dents in a community, and would, if given the opportunity, opportun-ity, participate in activities which would afford them a sense of worth. Thus depth interviews will be conducted with senior citizens cit-izens to explore the present conditions of their attitudes, needs, and the extent of dedication dedi-cation that can be expected on follow-up projects. The follow-up follow-up projects would be geared to the creation of challenging work and activities for the senior citizens. The study will be conducted within a five county area, in cluding Garfield, Iron, Kane, Millard and Washington counties. coun-ties.
