Chrlstensen, national nation-al president of the Sons of Utah Pioneers, arrived in Cedar City today to-day in preparation for the National Na-tional Encampment which opens on Friday, Aug. 8, and will continue con-tinue through Sunday, Aug. 10. Dr. Christensen is professor of physical chemistry at the University Uni-versity of Utah In Salt Lake City, and as president of the SUP will preside over the encampment which is being hosted by the Cedar City chapter of the SUP. Three days of activities have been planned for the nearly 400 SUP members anJ their wives who are expected to arrive for the encampment. Registration will begin In the forenoon Friday at Hotel El Escalante Es-calante under the direction of Clem Judd and Parley Dalley. At 1 p. m. Friday a tour through Old Iron Town, and Columbia Co-lumbia Iron Mining operation will proceed a special treat at , Mountain Meadow. At Mountain Meadow a history of that historic site will be related by Dr. Wm. R. Palmer, eminent historian of 1 Utah. Operations of the Columbia Colum-bia Iron Mining Company will 1 be explained br Graham D. Mac- ' Donald, superintendent. Friday evening a barbecued j dinner will be served at the Cedar Ce-dar Stake House by the Sixth Ward Relief Society. Entertain-; Entertain-; ment will also oe furnished by members of the Cedar City In-' In-' dian Branch of the LDS Church 1 under the direction of Branch President Wm. H. Manning. Mas-1 Mas-1 ter of ceremonies will be Dan Crawford, first vice president of the Cedar City Chapter of the SUP. Saturday's activities will begin t with i breakfast at the hotel j with the national officers conducting con-ducting the first business session of the encampment at 10 a. m. During the business session the wonien la attendance will be conducted to the Indian Branch where a history of the Piute Indians In-dians will be continued by Pres. Manning. I Ladies will visit historic and scenic spots of the city during the afternoon session while the SUP members conduct election of national na-tional officers at the hotel. Mrs. Bell J. Saturday evening the encampment encamp-ment personnel will travel to Old Fort Harmony where its historic significance will be explained by Dr. Palmer. Following the discus-slon, discus-slon, the President's Banquet will be served at New Harmony under un-der the direction of the St George Chapter of SUP with Henry Gralf as president Sunday the encampment will move to Cedar Breaks then to Duck Creek amphitheatre for morning worship services. Following Fol-lowing the services a special program pro-gram will be furnished by the Little Salt Lake Chapter of Parowan Paro-wan under the guidance of W. Clair Rowley, president, and box lunches will be served by the Parowan croup. The camp will adjourn following this activity. Preparations for the national encampment have been borne by the Cedar City chapter officers with I. E. Riddle as president, and It Is expected to be one of the most outstanding conventions ever held. |
