Show COACH APPOINTED TO ASSUME FOOTBALL POST Ianthus Wright, superintendent i of Iron County schools, announced an-nounced this week the appointment appoint-ment of Harold Norton, Spring-ville, Spring-ville, to the coaching staff of the Cedar City High School. Norton will fill the vacancy left by Glen Jackson, who left this spring to accept a post in the Jordan divi-sion divi-sion in Salt Lake County. Norton will work in the boys' physical education department with Bruce Decker, who was ap pointed early this year to fill the vacancy left by Ray Englestead. According to the contract sign, ed by Norton, he will assume tho head coaching Job for the school football team and will serve as assistant to Decker during the basketball season. No commit, ment has been made regarding spring sports but In all likelihood likeli-hood Norton, on the basis of his record, will handle the track and field squad with Decker taking over the baseball team. - . BAIOLO. KOaTON Norton is a native of Spring-ville Spring-ville where he was a four sport letterman in high school. He participated In football, basket. ball, track and .baseball, 'and was selected for two years to the state's Class B all-state teams In football. He was also given hon. orable mention in the all-state selections in basketball. In his senior year he served as captain of the football team. He graduated this spring from Bngham Young University with a bachelor of science degree in the field of physical education, health and recreation. While on the B Y U campus he lettered in football and track. . Holds Javelin Becord The new coach currently holds tho Skyline record In the Javelin Jave-lin throw at 225 feet six Inches. He set this record at the confer-eik confer-eik meet In 1965 when he took top honors in that event. He has served a two-year tout of duty with the United Statei Army and for three summers he worked with the Utah Parks Co in Cedar City as a driver for the tours conducted through the parks. . . , . Mrs. Norton is the former Ul-Dene Ul-Dene Adams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm.'B. Adams, Jr., ol Cedar City. They have one child, a boy, named Kevin. In the spring of this year Norton Nor-ton was associated with the Pro-vo Pro-vo High School basketball team, Class A champions. He worked during the season with coach Dolan Condie of that school ai a practice teacher and was recommended rec-ommended for his new position, by Coach Condie. Norton will assume his new assignment at the beginning of the 1956-57 school term In September. |
