Show Cedar High School Planning Group Sets Down New Educational Aims - A planning team of faculty members at the Cedar City High School have been busy since the close of the regular school session in the planning of educational specifications for the proposed new high school building. In a feature story appearing in the Iron County Record Jast week the basic planning program was outlined. Now, in a series of stories over the next few weeks, an attempt to view the various specifications of the different areas of study in connection with the planning team will be AH of the departments are developing their programs along lines of various innovations in educational systems which include in-clude such things as team teaching, teach-ing, large group Instruction, small group instruction, modified modi-fied scheduling and a host of other practical applications that have been tried and tested In other areas. However, each of these innovations inno-vations does not fit each of the departments in the same manner. As a result, each area of study is writing specifications to fit its own particular needs. Curriculum Chang Looking forward to the new building and new facilities the faculty planning team Is also putting some of the innovations into the curriculum study for the coming, year on a modified scale in hopes of developing the program to Its fullness at the time of occupancy in the new facilities. With this in mind the English department at the high school has outlined a new schedule for the coming year taking advantage advan-tage of some of these Innovations. Innova-tions. An effort toward team 'caching 'cach-ing will be made with members of the English department moving mov-ing from one class to another to i teach In specific areas. By this means only one teacher will prepare pre-pare a specific lesson for presentation presen-tation to as many as three units studying the same subject. There Is "also planned more complete utilization of text book materials, mater-ials, with the possible exchange of texts throughout the year to fit more appropriately Into the training program. Cooperative Program Efforts are also being made to cooperate with the Junior High School in offering a more complete com-plete program with continuity throughout the secondary education educa-tion program. With this type of program it is hoped that a more complete and comprehensive offering of-fering to students will be made available. Although large group Instruction Instruc-tion Is not feasible owing to current cur-rent room restrictions It is felt by the department In writing their specfications that this type of i instruction will be advantageous under proper conditions. Plans now call frr a tentative schedule of work blocks In the English department de-partment for two periods of one and one-half hour durations and a one-half hour period during each week. Large blocks of study will be utilized In both large group Instruction and small group Instruction, depending on the need and the one-half hour periods, according to Miss Ann Maxwell, will be "power packed" periods, paper correction, etc. This is a form of schedule modification modi-fication that is expected under the new program now being worked out and which will under go some testing In . the next school year where it Is applicable. applic-able. Extra Courses According to Miss Maxwell, who Is working with the study groin, with the schedule modification, modifi-cation, the utilization of titam teaching and large group lns;uc-tlon, lns;uc-tlon, it is feasible to expect trust extra courses will be made available avail-able on an elective basis for those who plan to continue study in this particular department Some of the elective course that are expected to be offered include in-clude contemporary writing, Journalism, special literary courses In addition to languages. It is expected that at least two languages will be made available avail-able this next school year. They will Include German and Spanish Span-ish and a possibility of French. Recommendations are also being be-ing made- ..fry the department to offer a full c nurse in languages with three years of study available avail-able to those who wish to master the languages. An emphasis is also being placed on communications in the department to develop logical writing and thinking with a different dif-ferent approach based on current research and training methods. Next week a discussion of the specifications for the departments depart-ments of mathematics and science will be given. |
