Show Redmen Respond To Call By Grid Coach Cedar City High School football foot-ball squad began a vigorous practice prac-tice schedule Monday, Sept. 1 as Coach Hal Norton Issued the first call for the 1958 s'vwi. The Redmen will undoubtedly be the heaviest squad that Norton Nor-ton has had In his three years at the school and he will be battling battl-ing for the Region 10 crown this season, a crown that went to the Dixie Flyers for the past two seasons and to which Dixie added upon for a state championship champ-ionship last season. Cedar High will play an eight game schedule which will open with the Millard Eagles at Fillmore Fill-more on Friday, Sept. 12. This has become an annual contest with the two squads starting the season's play for the past three vears. Last season the Eaeles de feated the Redmen 7 to 6 In the meeting and the Redmen will be out to revenge this defeat. The tentative .schedule takes the Redmen on the road for four games and will give local, fans an opportunity to- see them in action on four occasions. On September 19 the Redmen go to Milford for the first league game of the season and will make their first home appearance appear-ance on Wednesday, Sept. 21 against the Delta Rabbits. Hurricane Hur-ricane will meet the Redmen in Cedar City on Tuesday, Sept. 30. On October 10 Cedar will travel to Beaver. Cedar-Dixie game to be played play-ed in Cedar City this year will be on Thursday, Oct. 16. Reason for the Thursday date Is to eliminate elim-inate a conflict with the Deer Hunt which will open that week end. Oct. 24 will take the Redmen to Parowan for a game against the Rams and on Friday, Oct. 31, Kanab will come to Cedar for the final regular contest of the season., sea-son., Norton Indicated that his squad shows a great potential for the season. His backfield of 1957 will be back nearly in its entirety. Backfied of "experience" will average out at about 175 pounds which is not light for a class B high school. Returning here will be Phil Yergensen at fullback, 180 pounds; Gary Anderson, left half. 165 pounds; Ron Prince, right half, 185 pounds, and Eric Gardner, quarterback, 156 pounds. Other returning regulars In-elude In-elude Neil Gentry at center and Sheldon Boulter at end. Semi-regulars Semi-regulars from last season include Dale Rider at tackle and Randy Rosenberg at guard. Big men on the line this year will be Rider at 204 pounds, Mike Williams, also tipping the scales at 204 pounds. Williams was not out the latter part of last season, but is expected to see considerable action this year, Norton indicated. Norton expects his stiffest competition for the 1958 Region crown from the Dixie Flyers, the defending champions. Some speculation spe-culation has been voiced that I Milford will also be a strong I contender this season. |
