Show Parowan Hi Student Is Semi-finalist In Nat'l Merit System Qualifying Test William Gary Jensen, a stu- dent of Parowan High School with an unusually high scholastic scholas-tic rating, has been named a.s a semi finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, according to Bruce Decker, principal of the school. Young Jensen, a son of Mr. and Mrs. LaMar G. Jensen, passed pass-ed the national test with a score of 148, considered high, and indicating indi-cating that his chances for winning win-ning in the final tests are excellent. ex-cellent. If he does qualify he will earn a four-year college education educa-tion scholarship at the Institution Institu-tion of his own choice. Jensen is a Junior at Parowan High, but has completed requirements require-ments for graduation in June, i965, when he will graduate with the senior class. He has received all his education edu-cation In Parowan schools, and has been active in extra-curricular affairs, especially music, as well as maintaining a high scholastic record. Jensen's achievement Is the result of tests taken last spring In which students from all of the United States and territories competed In academic abilities. The National Merit Scholarship Program is designed to discover exceptionally talented young people, and encourage them to obtain a college education. The qualifying test is a three hour long tost of educational develop ment designed to measure the student's ability to i:m what he has learned, according to John Wilson, one of Gary's instructors instruct-ors at the school. More than ltt.OtK) high schools, enrolling almost 'Xy ' of the nation's na-tion's high school students, now participate in the program. The total number of semi finalists from each state constitute less than one per cent of the senior class members in that state. About 175 sponsors currently are awarding merit scholarships in addition to the one awarded by the national program. These scholarships are awarded to finalists fin-alists In the program. To become a finalist, Gary, along with the other semi-finalists, will have to take another 3-hour examination. Those who qualify a second time will be named finalists. Gary has been a member of both the chorus and band at the school. He plays a banjo and has appeared with a group of folk singers from the school at functions func-tions for school, community and church.
