Now, this day is observed observ-ed in more than 22,000 communities communi-ties in America and in 150 countries coun-tries around the world, uniting Christians in a bond of prayer for a better world. Offerings go to interdenominational home and foreign mission projects. Through World Day of Prayer, individuals everywhere in the state, nation, and the world are provided with an opportunity to Join In helping further peace and good will. This activity is interdenominational, inter-racial, and international in scope. In 18&7 Mrs. Darwin R. James president of the Women's Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Presby-terian Church in the U. S. A., sent out a call to Presbyterian women for a national day of prayer "when there shall be confession of individual and national sins, with offerings that will fitly express ex-press the contrition." Soon other denominations joined in this day of prayer. In 1908 the Council of Women for Home Missions was organized and it assumed re-sponsibilty re-sponsibilty for the Home Mission Day of Prayer. In 1890 two outstanding Baptist Bap-tist women, Mrs. Helen Barrett Montgomery and Mrs. Henry Pea-body Pea-body suggested that an interdenominational interde-nominational day of prayer for foreign missions be observed each year. In 1913 these same women made a world tour which led to a great concern for education educa-tion and literature for women. They returned home to inspire the raising of $3,000,000 for colleges col-leges in India and the Far East which still have support from World Day of Prayer offerings today. They also inspired the founding of the Committee on Christian Literature for Women and Children whose work Is still largely financed by World Day of Prayer gifts. In 1915 the Federation Fed-eration of Women's Boards of Foreign Missions of North Amer-' ica was formed and it became re- j sponsible for the Day of Prayer ior K reign Missions. The 75th Anniversary of the World Day of Prayer was observ-in observ-in the United States In 1961. Representatives Re-presentatives of nearly 100 countries coun-tries where World Day of Prayer is held came together in 37 special spe-cial Prayer Fellowships on five continents prior to the Day. This Day began with the vision and dedication of one woman. In the providence of God it has grown to involve millions of women around the world. |
