Show Chamber President Outlines Plans For Coming Year With the annual membership drive of the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce, Warren H. Bulloch, president of the organization has issued the following statement as to the alms and plans of the organization organ-ization for this year. When we look back over the accomplishments ac-complishments of our citizens "through cooperative action" we are Justly proud. Big things were accomplished, ac-complished, beginning with the building of the Escalante Hotel. Some eighty thousand dollars were raised for this. Next came the building of the railroad and for this a like amount was raised and donated for the right-of-way. This money was raised by public subscription sub-scription at a time when our population popu-lation was possibly not more than twenty-five hundred persons and our total valuation around $1,300,-000. $1,300,-000. The road through Zlon Canyon Can-yon was promoted and the first automobile road through Cedar Canyon to the Breaks and Navajo Lake was built. Main strecet was paved. The site of the Post Office was purchased by public subscription subscrip-tion for around $20,000 and given to the Government. The Gymnasium Gymna-sium at the B. A. C. was built the same way and given to the state, and In addition, much financial help was given toward the Armory. Contributions for five church buildings build-ings were made and help toward furnishing the first hospital building. build-ing. The reopening of the Bank was promoted, and we could go on and on with similar projects which were made possible through cooperative cooper-ative effort. This Is part ot the record. These are finished accomplishments and we can say "Well Done." The pre sent and the future now are ours. We must carry on as a progressive community with accomplishments and action for we have much to (Continued on Back Page) Chamber President Continued from Front Page do ahead. The Chamber of Commerce Com-merce Is simply an agent of the community, working In Its behalf. We should cooperate fully with the B. A. C. the same as we have done In the post. As the President of the Chamber of Commerce I feel we should have & full four year college education available to our young men and women. Southern Utah needs this school develop-ment develop-ment now so that our service men can enjoy that advanced training. Some may say we should wait but I say we should have it now. It will come In the future, I am sure, but the future will not take care of the need of the present. A college education is more necessary ne-cessary today than ever before. What have we done for our returned return-ed service men and women of lasting last-ing value outside of the education program? Nothing. I believe we should dedicate our full effort toward to-ward making this educational program pro-gram fit the needs of the southern part of the state and make it comparable com-parable to the educational advantages advan-tages offered by the northern part of the state. I think that In the past fjw years we have become civlcly lazy. Let's get together and push for a 1947 year of accomplishment. The year 1947 is our Centennial ye jr. One hundred years of Utah progress. pro-gress. Celebrations and entertainment entertain-ment will be heavy. Many more people peo-ple will visit Utah than ever before. Our club work will be heavy, likewise like-wise our outlay In finance will he heavy. We, your officers of the Chamber of Commerce, are planning plan-ning projects which will take a lot of work by ourselves and by all of the committees appointed. We intend to work in cooperation with the County Commissioners on roads which are important to Cedar Ce-dar City. The same will be true of the other projects listed such as the hospital, fire protection and recreation, re-creation, We have listed the. Cedar-Nevada Cedar-Nevada road as our No. 1 project for completion this year. We believe It can be finished. We will not fall. We will work with the City officials offi-cials and offer what help we can on culinary water development. This is going to be a gigantic project but until we accomplish it we cannot become the city we are entitled to become. We are very much interested interest-ed in adequate recreation of all kinds and this project will receive much financial help, along with hrlp in planning. We want to work with the School Board if we can be of assistance. We are very desirous of helping our Veterans on all of their projects and It Is also our aim to create more friendly relations ' with our adjacent communities and thus coonerate In making all South- em Utah a better place In which to live. We want to hold a tourist school so that all of our people who come in contact with the traveler will show a friendliness and an Interest in serving them with a smile and be ready with Information regarding our scenic wonders and recreational recreation-al offerings, pointing out matters of interest and encouraging them to spend more tune with us. We want to sponsor as many conventions con-ventions in Cedar City as possible. We should work with the Union Pacific Pa-cific to see if their tour schedules can be arranged so that tourists are given some shopping time in bur city. We aim to encourage new Industry Indus-try in our midst, and the development develop-ment of our natural resources which are on all sides of us. Your local Chamber of Commerce takes the responsibility of planning and stimulating action and in turn we ask each citizen to do his or her part. Your membership committee of the Chamber is now working on the membership drive. We ask that you support them by responding to their request. We have a heavy program pro-gram and with your support we promise you results. |
