V Smith and Prof Cummings for the negative 3 Though the professor had been chosen extemporaneously by the negative side to speak on the subject he with the help of his colleague made it warm for their opponents and it was only after due deliberation that the decision was reached for the affirmative though it was not a unanimous conclusion on on the part n of the judges Next Monda Monday is the anniversary anniversary anniversary an an- of the birthday of Abraham Lincoln and at the regular meeting in inthe inthe inthe the evening an appropriate will be rendered in commemoration of the occasion I k THE subject of Wrights Wright's lecture lecture lecture lec lec- ture before the battalion last Wednesday was II McClellan's Peninsular Campaign II In In the II early part of 1862 said the speaker II the Union generals had formed a plan for carrying on the war and among the important things to be done if possible was to take Richmond Virginia Virginia Virginia Vir Vir- ginia which had been neen made the Confederate Confederate Confederate Con Con- federate capital In the forepart of 1862 General McClellan with his army was ready to march around Richmond his first plan being to go down do the Potomac then across the country to the city but hut owing to some disadvantage he changed his project and decided to take his army in boats to Fort Monroe intending to march up the peninsula from that point between the James and the York rivers The transfer of troops was soon completed and the Union army left Fort Monroe for Yorktown McClellan pushed onward but was stopped at the latter town by a Confederate army of about ten thousand soldiers This delayed the advance of the Federals for about a month It was at the same place where Cornwallis lad had laid down his arms eighty years before The Federals finally took Yorktown by siege the rebels having having having hav hav- ing retreated to Williamsburg At this place another attack was made and the Southern army fell back to Richmond McClellan now posted his army army near the Confederate capital and threw up heavy earthworks He intended to wait for reinforcements here and then to march marchon on to fo Richmond The Union general though fought one severe battle with with Johnson at Fair Oaks in which the Southern commander was sev severely rely wounded and a few days after the bat battle battle battle- e his place was filled by the appointment of Robert E.
