Show Hurricane Lions Seek Support For Virgin River Dam Project As a means of uniting all civic clubs in support of the proposed V'irigin River Irrigation project, i the Hurricane Lions Club sponsored a meeting Monday night of civic groups of Iron and Washington counties to discuss ways and means of supporting the project. The meeting was attended by representatives re-presentatives of the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club, the St. George Chamber of Commerce, Lions and Rotary Clubs, and civic leaders of the Hurricane, Toquervllle and LaVerkin area. Senator Claude Hirschl explained explain-ed the status of the project, which would impound sufficient water to bring an additional fourteen thousand acres of fertile farming landing in the Hurricane-Washington area under cultivation. The water would be stored in a reservoir reser-voir created by the building of a dam on the Virgin river in the vicinity vi-cinity of Virgin City. It would also provide for the development of a new electric power source. Such a project, Senator Hirschl pointed out, would be of tremendous tremend-ous value to all southern Utah, and Is ueservlng of the support of the people of the entire area. The project has been reported to the reclamation bureau and has a good chance of final approval it is understood. un-derstood. As a result of the meeting Monday Mon-day the Hurricane Lions Club will organize a project committee, including in-cluding representatives from civic clubs of Cedar City and St. George, and an active campaign of promotion promo-tion will be launched immediately. |
