Show I SHOULD PURIFY I GRAIN VARIETIES H arm. r Lose Grestl) On Account H Of Mixed QnlM H Every person in Utah suffers be- H .vim' of our badly mixed varieties of K small jjrain, according to Assistant H Professor George Stewart, of the Dc- H partment of Agronomy, Utah Agri- H cultural College. Farmers lose some- H where in the neighborhood of $50,000 H a year for wheat alone on account of " - thf mixed grains bringing a lower H price. "Merchants find it more dif- H ficult to dispose of the non-standard H milling wheats," says Prof. Stewart. M "Because millers cannot make as H good flour from mixed wheat, they H lose both in trade and in price. Poorer H flour meanR poorer bread, which H everybody eats. Moreover, pastries H are likely to suffer more even than H bread. We eat, therefore, not only H poorer bread but also less delicious M desserts. H "The cause of all this trouble lies H in two things: (1) several varieties H occur in one Hold badly intermixed, H and (2) weeds are allowed to grow H along with the grain. During the H year ending July 1918, nearly half H 44 per cent, to be exact of Utah's H market wheat was graded "mixed." B This caused a loss of about 6 cents a H bushel, due entirely to varietal mix- H tures. Of the other 56 per cent more H than half 28.6 per cent was "cut" H one, two or three grades due to wheat H of "other classes," another direct re- H suit of mixing, and due to "heat dnm- H age." which is caused by the presence H of green weeds in the grain at harvest H time. The price in this case suffered H from 2 to 7 cents a bushel. Oats and H barley are in the same condition. H "The whole trouble, however, is H preventable. (lean ground, clean H seed, and a little rouging will remedy H all. let the land be cleaned of weeds H and of volunteer grain. Let seed, as H clean as obtainable, be fanned and M screened before planting. Just before H harvest, weeds and all admixtures H can be pulled by hand and carried from H the field. This grain is then threshed H separately, and saved for next seas- H un's planting. The first sackful that H m threshed should be discarded to H avoid contamination in the thresh - |
