Show I INFLUENCE OF MUSIC. jB '"EDAR CITY has always enjoyed the reputatior HH of being musical. For '20 years, dating back t H the early training given by the late lamented Jos H Cosslett, we have possessed one of the best choirs I to be found in the smaller cities of the state. Vis H itors from the north to our conferences and othei H gatherings have almost invariably commented up- H on the excellence of our choir and soloists. In the I eisteddfod held here about 20 years ago. Cedar City I H showed up among the baft. The training given I H at the Rranch Normal and the Branch Agricultural H College since that time has had the effect of keep- tm ing Cedar City in the lead in things musical. H But the present summer, we are going ahead H by leaps and bounds. Through the efforts of Mr. j H Fred Graham, tenor singer and director, who con- H ceived the idea of bringing a school of music to H the southern part of the state and selected Cedar H City on account of its ce'ntral position, we have H one of the best musical organizations in operation HB here that has ever been attempted south of Provo. HB We have a faculty of instructors with us for ten; I weeks, which cannot fail to make a deep impres- WM sion upon the future aims and aspirations of their hundred and fifty pupils, and the art of music will receive an impetus this summer that will carry it well along it', way toward the head of the procession, proces-sion, and a few years hence we look to see Cedar City pointed out as one of the foremost musical towns of its size in the West. The city is fairly teeming with music. It can be heard from early morn until late at flight, on almost every hand. It is reflected in the creditable band that has recently been organized here, in the excellent concerts that are of almost weekly occurrence, oc-currence, in the operas and other musical treats which the public enjoy. The influence of music is elevating, and will have a far reaching effect upon the social and home life of the residents of our city. A community or an individual can well afford to invest a part of their earnings in musical education, for there is nothing that will bring more joy, peace, comfort and satisfaction than the ability to sing well or perform on the piano or other musical instruments |
