Show POST-MASTER W. GRANGER RETURNS Talks Interesting!) of Observations and Experiences in the Service of the C. S. Abroad. Postmaster Walter Granger is back from the service. He arrived the latter lat-ter part of last week, looking well and fit. Naturally Mr. Granger, lieing a man of intelligence and observation, hasa furd of interesting information on war topics. In some particular!, he enjoyed the service, and took a keen interest in the war, his only anxiety up to the time the armistice was signed being to get over and "spit" a Dutchman with his bayonet, in the handling of which he was conceded to be an adept. Hut his ambition in this respect was thwarted, for he did not reach the front until after hostilities had ceased. Since war was declared off the time has hung heavily on his hands, but he was careful to avail himself of the two weeks furlough proffered oach Sammie over then, ami accompanied by the offer of free transportation to nearly any part of France, England or Italy. During his furlough. Ser- . geant Granger "took in" the greater part of Franca and part of Italy. After the signing of the armistice most of the Post .Master's time was devoted to guarding German and U. B. prisoners. Of the latter there were approximate 50,000 at the close of hostilities, a large proportion of the imprisoned men being Niggers. The appointment of sergeant came to Mr. Grange? entirely unsolicited, and he states thut the only time he attempted to use any political or other oth-er pull was after landing on this side ! of the water, when there seemed to be a strong possibility of his being hold in the marine service indefinitely, lie then invoked the aid of Senator King and Rep. Welling to get bin. out, so that he might return to his family and occupation. "Walt" entered the service upon his ii initiative As a government em-yee em-yee he might have escaped being drafted, bet as be had only a wife, wlio is self-supporting, he felt it hit duty to answer the call of his conn try. He makes a splendid appearance in bis uniform, but was anxious to exchange it again for civilian apparel We are all glad to .ee our post master home again, but possibly n one in the community feels quit .is happy a the faithful little assistant poi-t mistress who wrestled with the affairs of the otlice so successfully (luring the absenie of her soldier bus-band. |
