Show si During the past autumn months, we are told that eleven hundred cars of hogs were shipped through Iron county over the Salt Lake Route to the California markets through Iron county, mind you, which is one of the best corn and hog districts in the United States, and is practically ,500 miles nearer to the coast market than Idaho, from which the hogs were shipped. What a woeful woe-ful lack of enterprise is manifested by the showing show-ing on the part of local people. There are thousands thou-sands of acres of the best of corn land in this county which have not yet been even scratched. There is country enough in this county to support a population of 50,000 from the production of corn and hogs alone. And yet this year not more than a dozen cars of hogs will be exported from the county, and practically this number of porkers pork-ers will be shipped back in the form of dressed and cured meats. Next year, from present prospects, there will be a railroad to Cedar City, which will greatly facilitate the handling of this business, and the people should exert themselves to bring every available acre of land under cultivation, and thereby increase the business of the proposed railroad. |
