Show GARRISON ARRAIGNS TAFT. Former President Resents Attack as Unjust and Unmeasured. Washington. Secretary Garrison of tho. war department issued a formal statement Monday sharply arraigning .former President William II. Taft for having lent his name to what aro termed "statements mendacious In character and mischievous in intent," with relation to conditions in tho Philippine Islands, under tho present administration. Mr. Garrison charges, show plainly "that tho Republican politicians pol-iticians aro attempting to lay tho foundation foun-dation for campaign material with respect re-spect to tho Philippine Islands." Former President Taft, in a statement state-ment mado public at New Haven, Conn., characterizes Secretary Garrison's Garri-son's arraignment of him for his attitude at-titude on Philippine affairs as "unjust, "un-just, vehement and unmeasured." Mr. TaftT says that there has not been the slightest tinge of partisan feeling in his interest in tho Philippine problem. "It Beems to me," ho sayB, "that I havo not been unmindful of the necessity ne-cessity for standing by this Democratic Demo-cratic administration In a national crisis, without regard to party consideration." |
