And BeBB inasmuch as the United States met BBn chantmen are unarmed and cannot ob- BBJ tain guns foi some time to come, it BBJ is not probable that they will venture BBJ without convoy into the danger zone BBb surrounding Great Britian and France. HH Until they do there is likelihood of BBM American ships being torpedoed by BjB the German submarines. Congress is BBb considering favorably the request of BBJ merchant vessels for arms, but is un- H willing to send United States battle BBJ ships into the danger zone to protect BBBJ them. This being the case, it may be BBJ some tinii', at least, before anv Ann i BBJ ican vessel may be submitted to the BVJ assuult of the submarines. BVJ In the meantime, however, the de- BBJ uti'uction of both English and neutral ships of various nations is going on BJBfl a frightful rate, as high us 1ft vessels Bfll having been sunk in a single day. JSP The situation is a grave one for the B entente allies and Is reflected in the fact that the English parliament has just authorized another very large wa loan in order to continue and accentuate accentu-ate hostilities. How much success is being met with by the allies in the destruction of th Caiman submarines it i impossible to ascertain. But from the activity displayed by the German in thin mode of warfare, it would seem but little if any headway is being made against the dreaded submarines, which appear to be well-nigh invinsible. What the ultimate outcome will he. unless some master of ingenuity in vent an implement with which to successfully suc-cessfully combat the submarine, It Is impossible to predict at this time; but the present outlook is extremely grave for Germuny's opponents. |
