Show GREAT INTEREST IN NEW COAL FIELD Halt Lake Financial Journal Han In couraginK Keport of Impending Developmental in Iron County. Fred W. Webb, president anil general gen-eral manager of the Iron County Coa1 company, returned yesterday from the properties of the compnny near t'eduv City, Utah, where he went to commence work on the aerial tram from the properties to the terminal located almost at the main street of CM City. Tin' Cedar City Chamber of Commerce met last Monday nipht and resolutions were passed Indorsing the efforts Mr. Webb is making, looking look-ing to the great development of this country. The enthusiasm displayed at the meeting was marked The development devel-opment of these fields is of epoch making importance, not only to Cedar City, but to the surrounding country, nnd the fact that a railroad will shortly short-ly be built in order to take care of the tranportation of coal will open up n Ian mining and farming territory thnt will mean millions of dollars to the local people, The knowledge with which Mr. Webb and his associates are beginning begin-ning will have an influence upon the manner in which the developments will take place at the coal property. The deposits on the Kolob Plateau liave been estimated by geologists in the employ of the United States geological geo-logical survey, and have since been confirmed by eminent mining engineers, engi-neers, to contain above 2,500,000,000 tons of coal. The coal is an excellent coking coal and representatives of smelting interests are now in the field making examinations of the deposits looking to the erection of a smelter at the mountain of iron that is located within ten miles of the property of the Iron County Coal company. That a smelter will follow the development of these coal deposits would seem to be assured. Upon his arrival in the city, Mr. Webb said: "I have been engaged in many large propositions throughout the country, but the undertaking of developing these Koloh Plateau coal deposits is of the greatest magnitude of any de-. de-. veleopment proposition that I have either handled myself or been interested inter-ested in. The needs of coal along the Salt Lake railroad are enormous, and ' as everyone knows, the shortage is marked. We have entered into tenta tive contracts with various steamship and other companies at tidewater in order to provide a market for our coal, and a railroad will be run thirty miles west of Cedar City. The line has been surveyed and the cost per mile will be extremely low, owing to the topography of the country, there being be-ing very little grade and the railroad people, who have become interested since the Iron County Coal company has taken up the development of these properties is of such strength that I am convinced of the construction of the road in the near future, if the Salt Lake Route does not see fit to run n spur from Lund themselves. The importance im-portance of the development of these coal fields to the state of Utah, and and particularly to Salt Lake City, cannot be underestimated. The cry-iny cry-iny needs of Salt Lake for coal are heard wherever I go, and I believe this winter will be the last in the history his-tory of the state when coal will not be plentiful for the needs of every home, industry and manufacturer, not only thronhout the state, but a'ong the line of the Salt Lake and Los Angeles railroad. "The interest in the development of these fields of the Iron County Coal company is very keen. I am receiving inquiries from nearly every city and town along the line of the railroad from Salt Lake to Los Angeles regarding re-garding our plans for the development develop-ment of these coal deposits in order to relieve the shortage of coal thnt exist. ex-ist. . "Immediately upon the construction of the aerial tram, adit tunnels, the pillar system of mining will be Inaugurated In-augurated and coal mined with the utmost ut-most celerity. "I expert to be in Cedar City every wei k from now on until we are mining min-ing coal in order to keep track of the developments and push the work forward for-ward as rapidly as possible."
