Show .... KEEP YOUR CHIN UP By Dr. Frank Crane. I am going to tell you tho truth a-bout a-bout this naughty world, and tho truth is that whichever way you're going, up or down, people want to help you along. If you are going up we nil want to boost; if you nro going down we all want to push. Thnt is what wo call sympathy. You hear complaints that tho rich aro growing richer nnd the poor poorer. poor-er. That has always been the case, simply because it in human nature. Society hns nlwnys been organized , to increase the wealth of the wealthy I and the power of the powerful; nlso i to mako tho weak weaker. , Th rule is that "to him that hath ' shall bo given, nnd from him that hath shall bo taken away, even thnt which ho hath." There's no use whining about it. It is simply one of the flinty laws of nature. Tho only thing to do with naturo's laws is to adjust one's self to them nnd not to complain. This might be called the lnw of inertia of prosperity. You aro gualty yourself. Whom do you want to see? Tho man every-1 body wants to see. And you read tho book everybody-, reading and go to tho store whore It is "the thing" to go. "Follow tho crowds," says tho advertiser, ad-vertiser, with, his nhorwd knowlcdgo of our makeup. If you havo a hundred dollars ahead, to whom do you want to hand it? To. tho poor man who needs it? Not nt nil, but to tho rich banker who docs not need it. If I nsk you for tho loan of a quarter quar-ter you will pass it over to mo without with-out a word if you think it is a trifling trif-ling matter to mo; but if you suspect sus-pect I really am. In want; and need tho quarter to buy a little food with, that's quite another nffair; you can't encourago that sort of thing; I should go to the associated chari ties. Now, tho way to uso this law is to feign prosperity even if you have it not. Keep your chin up. Wear good Clothes. Don't withdraw from the Bocicty of the prosperous. Look pleasant. Don't let yourself get down n,t the heel. Don't get thnt poor beggar look on your face. It isn't hypocrisy. It isn't pretense. It is sheer courage. It is letting tho world know that whilo you live you purposo to fight nnd that like Old General Taylor do "don't know when you'ro licked. Keep smiling and an unfriendly universe will not know what to do with you; so it will crown you. Says Alfred de Vigny: "All those that struggle against the unjust heavens hnvc had the admiration and secret love of men." Fate is a bluff. Face her, defy her nnd she will fawn on you. Fate is cruel, but only to the quitter. quit-ter. By Dr. Frank Crane. |
