Show In Our Campaign Against the Great , White Plague Nature Is With Us - By DR. WALKER VEOZIE, Now York University. Tuberculosis is decreasing nt an accelerated rate. Its frequency haa dropped nearly GO per cent sineo 18G5. This decline undoubtedly is due in part to tho growing provnlenee of cleaner habits, better food and the cult of the open window ; tlio adverso food and living conditions, incident upon tho World war, 6et back tho improvement nnny years in Europe, especially in Austria. Another factor, however, in tho disappearance of tho disease has been shown to bo the fact that resistance to it is what the biologists call a dominant domi-nant hereditary trait. A dominant hereditary trait is a characteristic transmitted trans-mitted from parent to offspring, which tends to assert itself in tho offspring off-spring over n contrary characteristic whenover the two are present together. Hesistanco to tuberculosis is an hereditary trait and also dominant, for moro children of marriages between resistant and non-resistant parents will he proof against tuberculosis than will bo susceptiblo to the disease. These results give occasion for opitimism in respect to tho ultimato utcomo of our international campaign against tho whito plague, as we f assured that nature is allied with and not against us in tlio struggle i |
